Caterpillar Inc. is proud to introduce the next generation of its industry-leading 3500 family of engines. For 35 years the Cat® 3500 engine platform has been the industry gold standard for heavy duty diesel and gas engines worldwide.  With more than 190,000 engines in the field and more than 3 billion operating hours in mining, rail, electric power, oil & gas and marine applications, the 3500 exemplifies Caterpillar’s long standing commitment to technical innovation and continuous improvement in the interest of customers’ business success.  The 3500E is built upon this commitment, and its launch ushers in a new era of industry leadership from Caterpillar.

3500E Customer Value

The 3500E series builds upon the legacy of the Cat 3500 engine platform, providing customers up to 20% greater power density, 10% greater fuel efficiency, enhanced durability, and longer life to overhaul while reducing owning and operating cost in mining, rail, marine, oil & gas and electric power applications. Like its predecessors, the 3500E is designed to be remanufactured and key components are backwards compatible, enabling customers to extend the value of their investment. The 3500E is also designed to meet the most stringent diesel engine emission regulations without sacrificing the performance or reliability that Caterpillar customers expect and deserve from a gold standard product.

“The 3500 platform has been a powerhouse of value and performance for 35 years. The newest generation of our gold standard engine is designed to sustain and grow that legacy, offering customers the very best value proposition for their engine investment,” commented Rod Shurman, Product Manager for the 3500 platform.  “Our customers use our heavy duty engines to power a global energy infrastructure – mining trucks carrying ore to be processed, tugboats guiding ships to harbor, drill rigs tapping precious oil and gas reserves, generators bringing vital electricity to communities, hospitals and data centers. These operations are critical to human progress but they are under intense cost pressure. The 3500E will help our customers meet today’s business challenges as only Cat engines can – through proven performance, long life and lower operating cost.”

3500E Component and System Enhancements

The new 3500E series engine achieves greater power from the enhanced cast iron engine block and cylinder heads, while the new block and crankshaft design increases durability to ensure maximum customer value. The engine also has two available fuel systems--- mechanical electronic unit injector or common rail--- that are optimally applied by application and regulated markets. Caterpillar has a long history of engineering aftertreatment solutions that are transparent to the customer and the 3500E is no exception, offering fully integrated aftertreatment options that are designed to deliver optimized engine performance at the lowest owning and operating cost. The fuel efficient 3500E meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IIIB emissions standards using either a urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system or an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) aftertreatment system, depending upon customer application.

The new 3500E is manufactured in Caterpillar’s flagship large engine manufacturing center in Lafayette, Indiana as well as its newest large engine manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China to best serve our more than 10,000 global customers. Like all Cat engines, the 3500E is backed by the Cat Global Dealer Network, long-recognized for world class equipment, parts and service ensuring unparalleled performance throughout product ownership.
