Mick George Ltd 'Reach for the Stars'

It was all smiles at the former RAF Brampton site this week, thanks to a special arrival, as Mick George Ltd became part of a very exclusive club. Only last month, the very first Volvo EC480E High Reach was commissioned in Great Britain, and Mick George Ltd has been quick to add the impressive demolition machine to its ever-expanding portfolio of equipment.

The ‘plants’ first requirement is befitting of its striking nature, as it goes to work on the former Ministry of Defence premises, located in Cambridgeshire. Since the MOD announced that the site was surplus to requirements back in 2006, it has since been officially closed in 2013, lying redundant until only last year, when it was sold to property developers.

Mick George Ltd is currently completing £1.1million Demolition works on the 70 acre development, which is set to house up to 500 residential homes and other community dwellings, with the main 3 storey ‘Administration’ building receiving the first action of the EC480E HR.

‘No rest for the wicked’ as they say. With another fortnight planned at RAF Brampton, the new machine will be swiftly back on the front-line, on three further projects that the company is presently involved.

The Volvo EC480E High Reach has been developed in house by Volvo Construction Equipment. Key to its armoury is the machine’s versatility, providing the ability to switch between demolition and conventional digging equipment, thanks to the modular pre-boom arrangement and the hydraulically adjustable undercarriage.

The EC480E HR has a enhanced maximum pin height of 31 metres, tool weight of 3 tonnes, working with an operating angle of 20°, and a variety of hydraulic line configurations to account for the numerous attachment possibilities.

Jon Wilmore, Procurement Manager at Mick George Ltd said: ‘’The business as a whole has recorded some fantastic results of late, and has even greater aspirations in the near future. Our contracting services lie at the heart of everything the company is about, so it’s pleasing to see this area continue to develop with such intensity. We’re currently working on many high-profile projects, alongside some major players in the industry, which is a testament to the level of work we’re providing.’’

Wilmore continued: ‘’Right across the business we continue to invest in people and equipment. Recently we’ve recruited a wealth of experience in our contracting departments that is helping us push on to the next level. In specific reference to the EC480E HR, the performance and reliability of our existing Volvo plant, made acquiring this equipment a relatively easy decision, especially as it opens up new ‘doors’ with respect to the work we can now complete without external assistance.’’

Mick George has grown to become one of the leading suppliers to the construction industry in East Anglia and the East Midlands with a commercial fleet size in excess of 290 HGV vehicles. They specialise in bulk excavation, demolition & earthmoving services, ready mixed concrete, a wide range of skip hire and waste management services, Commercial Trade Waste Service and aggregate supply.
