World’s strongest mini crane gets a lift at Velocity Village

A UNIC URW-1006 has recently installed an external fire escape at Velocity Village in Sheffield. Before the world’s strongest mini crane could start work it had to be lifted into position, over a balustrade by a hiab truck crane.

The Velocity Village complex is in the heart of Sheffield and is comprised of both residential and commercial units. The contemporary building is almost completely faced in glass, maximising both the light and stunning views across the nearby Peak District. As part of recent improvement works, local renowned artist Steve Mehdi was commissioned to create a focal piece for the courtyard space. GGR was entrusted with putting this Man of Steel in his new home.

The mighty URW-1006 was, this time, used to install a new steel fire escape staircase to the exterior of the building. With its unrivalled 10 tonnes of lifting power and maximum lift height of 22.8m the URW-1006 was the perfect machine for the job. The URW-1006 offers a generous 30.7 metre lifting height (with fly jib) and 24.3 metre working radius, yet at only 2 metres wide still retains class-beating minimal dimensions for working in restricted spaces.

This versatile mini crane also has a unique pick and carry function which enables it to travel with loads up to 1.5 tonnes. Its configurable outriggers provide maximum stability when lifting on uneven surfaces thanks to their full safety interlocking system. For this job, its full range of lifting capabilities were used, it was required to lift steel uprights weighing 980kg to a height of 21m. Due to the tight work space a very experienced operating team was required; the customer opted for a Full Contract Lift for this complex job.
