All the way to the top: new Demag ® AC 160-5 all terrain crane for Könning Autokranen

With its new Demag® AC 160-5 all terrain crane, Könning Autokrane, which is headquartered in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Stadtlohn, is expanding the performance range of its Demag fleet further upwards. “Before this, the AC 120 was the biggest Demag crane in our fleet. That means that with our new AC 160-5, we’re moving up into a higher category that will enable us to take care of even more projects for our customers,” reports company owner Marcel Könning, who picked up the crane in Zweibrücken together with his wife Elisabeth (Marketing & Controlling), and his daughter Verena Könning (Junior Manager). Crane operators Christoph Heming and Konrad Ruhnau, who were also there for the handover, are excited about the new machine as well. Following a tour of the Terex Cranes plant in Wallerscheid, the crane was handed over by Terex Cranes Sales Manager Helge Prüfer and Senior Sales Manager for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland Christian Kassner. “The tours of our facilities are just a little extra that we like to offer our customers when they come to pick up a crane,” explains Helge Prüfer, who has had an excellent business relationship with Marcel Könning for many years.

As an enthusiastic fan of the Demag brand, Marcel Könning has made sure that his fleet’s cranes are predominantly Demag machines. “This actually means that we benefit enormously from Demag’s shared-component approach. In other words, a lot of popular spare parts and components, such as runners, are the same for a lot of models, meaning that we need to invest much less in inventory,” points out Marcel Könning, who additionally is tremendously happy that the cranes from Zweibrücken are once again leaving the factory with the Demag logo and that the storied brand is once again part of his fleet.

Ultimately, however, the emotional attachment to the brand was less important than the superior technology behind the Demag AC 160-5. In fact, the unit’s maximum boom length of 68 meters, compact design, and new IC-1 Plus control system were the truly crucial factors in Marcel Könning’s purchase decision. And they should also prove to be invaluable for the precast component assembly work for which the company will be predominantly using its new crane.
