Media Backgrounder - KOHLER EFI® Technology

EFI Overview

“EFI” is the common abbreviation for Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) technology. This technology – with roots in the automotive industry – ensures engines provide optimal fuel efficiency, which helps to reduce emissions and provides end users with enhanced engine performance and significant fuel savings.

KOHLER EFI – How it Works

The KOHLER Command PRO EFI Engine – available in models ranging between 19 and 35.5 HP – is the only closed-loop EFI engine in its class. What makes these engines unique is an oxygen sensor that analyzes the air/fuel mixture in the engine’s muffler. If the oxygen level strays from the ideal air/fuel mixture, the sensor triggers adjustments to the amount of fuel injected into the system. Only KOHLER EFI engines then “close the loop” between the air/fuel intake and the exhaust output to provide a constant stream of critical feedback, which helps deliver optimal fuel efficiency and other benefits, including easier starting, fuel adaptability, improved power, and better reliability.

Benefits of KOHLER EFI

In addition to improved engine performance, KOHLER EFI technology has proven to save end users $600 per engine every year, which adds up quickly – especially for those utilizing more than one KOHLER EFI engine.  This is because KOHLER EFI engines use up to 25 percent less fuel when compared to one of KOHLER’s carbureted engines under comparable load conditions.

When it comes to engine maintenance, KOHLER EFI engines incorporate proprietary diagnostic software, which can be used to tap into an engine’s critical performance data. The software provides a variety of information to help simplify upkeep and repairs, including a log of operating conditions, total hours, oil temperatures, detailed load parameters, and more.

The Future of EFI

Considering the many benefits offered through EFI engines, it should come as no surprise that the technology is experiencing rapid growth and acceptance nationwide. More OEMs are incorporating the technology as end users reap the benefits of improved performance, reliability and fuel efficiency. KOHLER EFI engines can be found in a wide variety of applications, including commercial mowers, welders, generators, saw mills, stump cutters, and more.

Based on the increased demand for engines that run on alternative fuels, Kohler recently expanded its EFI offering to include propane and flex-fuel models. The Command PRO EFI propane engine offers all the benefits of EFI in combination with the clean-burning, eco-friendly benefits of propane. The Command PRO Flex Fuel EFI is the first non-road engine certified by the EPA to run on any ethanol blend from E0 to E85.

In the years ahead, KOHLER will continue to invest in our industry-leading EFI technology as it remains focused on fuel efficiency and managing the increase of ethanol-based fuels. In fact, the company expects all engines for outdoor power equipment will eventually move to an EFI system due to the performance benefits the technology provides and increased emissions requirements.
