bauma 2016: Wirtgen exhibits machines also as new collector's models

Model collectors will be thrilled when they see the Fan Shop on the Wirtgen Group's exhibition area, because apart from its 26 real construction machines, the company also has scale collector's models on display, as do all the Group product brands.

The Wirtgen collection includes its largest cold milling machine, the W 250i, the front loader W 100 CFi, the powerful cold recycler and soil stabilizer WR 240i, and the impressive surface miner 4200 SM. Fabricated by the Nuremberg-based company "Zinkdruckguss-Modelle GmbH (NZG)," the models in 1:50 scale have a variety of working parts and are identical copies of the originals, right down to the finest detail.

Wirtgen cold milling machines: Setting the pace in road rehabilitation

Wirtgen is a specialist when it comes to roadway repair. Its cold milling machines can remove any damaged pavement down to a specified depth, regardless of whether just the surface course needs to be milled off, or the entire road structure. The product range extends from machines for renewing small surfaces and repairing sections of road to large machines for the powerful removal of entire surfaces on highways and at airports.

Wirtgen will also be taking along a new member of its compact class to Munich: the W 100 CFi. This milling machine is designed for relatively large job sites with tight conditions. Thanks to the large conveyor slewing angle – 60° in each direction – and its excellent maneuverability, even intersections and traffic circles are a breeze for this machine. The model version is equipped with the Flexible Cutter System, or FCS for short. The FCS makes it possible to quickly and easily switch milling drums with different tool spacings or working widths.

Another impressive product is the flagship of Wirtgen's fleet of cold milling machines: the W 250i. It is designed to remove an entire road structure in a single pass. The model of the same name also has real working parts. For example, the conveyor can be swiveled into the desired position. Just a single click shifts the mounted weather canopy into position for loading. The engine hood opens, for fast access to the drive unit.

Wirtgen recyclers and soil stabilizers: A solid solution

Increasing the load-bearing capacity of soils or roadway structures is only one application of the WR product family. The WR 200i, WR 240i and WR 250 are "full-liners" offering equally compelling cold recycling features. When operated in cold recycling mode, the wheeled machines produce premium base courses with 100% recycling of the existing material. When stabilizing surfaces or recycling asphalt, binders are homogeneously mixed with the existing material – bound or unbound – right on site and reprocessed.

The all-arounder in this family is the WR 240i. With its large working width and depth, and its high milling output and mixing capacity, the machine offers maximum flexibility for all soil stabilization and cold recycling operations. Like its “big brother,” the small model also has a moving cabin, and the wheels can be turned precisely to the desired position for maneuvering in confined spaces. The mixing rotor is an exact replica of the original.

Wirtgen surface miners: Mining minerals cost efficiently

Wirtgen surface miners are used for the selective extraction of mineral deposits in open-cast mines. Wirtgen markets the surface miners 2200 SM/2200 SM 3.8, 2500 SM and 4200 SM, three proven performance classes that can be variably configured to suit specific projects. Their main field of application is in open-cast mining. Limestone, coal, iron ore, gypsum, bauxite, phosphate, salt, granite, kimberlite and oil shale can be selectively mined to obtain products of high purity. However, in addition to mining mineral deposits, surface miners also perform routing work for roadways, rail lines and tunnels.

The Wirtgen 4200 SM is the powerhouse among the mining machines, used for jobs requiring the extraction of hard or soft rock on a large scale. With 1,194 kW of power, this giant eats through rock, removing, crushing and loading the material onto heavy goods vehicles in a single pass. Built in 1:50 scale, the model of the 4200 SM is almost as imposing as the real thing. The die-cast metal model is equipped with all-track steering and individually height-adjustable crawler tracks. Its conveyor can also be swiveled, raised and lowered. Another highlight is the rotating milling drum, likewise fashioned in fine detail.

Calling all collectors! Models with new logo

Now that the Wirtgen Group has a new corporate identity, even these small models will gradually be adapted to the new look. The W 100 CFi, W 250i and WR 240i models at bauma already bear the new branding. However, the surface miner 4200 SM still has the original machine decals. For collectors, this is a one-time chance to keep hold of a bit of tradition with the largest of all the Wirtgen models.
