Volvo CE developed a new tooth system for medium and large excavators and wheel loaders. It is meant to be for the Volvo wheel loaders between Volvo L60 and Volvo L350 and excavators from 14 tonnes Volvo EC140E up to 94 tonnes excavator Volvo EC950E. Because it is designed exclusively for these Volvo machines the teeth and adaptors are matched to the specification, size, and model of machine. This new Volvo tooth system should increase productivity and fuel efficiency of those Volvo machines. The new Volvo tooth system is supposed to dig deeper and stay longer sharp because it features self-sharpening design. There are different types of tooth available. For Volvo wheel loaders (between Volvo L60 and Volvo L350), those are a general purpose tooth, an abrasive material tooth, an extra wide abrasive material tooth, a rock and abrasive material tooth together with a flush adapter, a bolt-on loader adapter, a bolt-on adapter, a top leg adapter, and a bolt-on segment. For the Volvo excavator buckets (e.g. general purpose bucket or heavy duty bucket), there is a general purpose tooth, an abrasive material, and a rock handling tooth, an abrasive material tooth with extra wear material, a spade nose tooth, an excavator twin pick tooth with a bottom leg adapter, a bottom leg adapter with extra long upper leg, a bottom leg adapter for wear cap and an excavator wear cap. As Volvo reported, changing teeth should be easy and fast thanks to the new hammer-less locking system. An auto-tightening effect enables to put the reusable pin locks into place simply by twisting it a quarter turn. Thanks to a smooth surfaces feature in critical areas the stress during working is better distributed.Read full article

Volvo Construction Equipment’s tool ActiveCare is 24/7/365 monitoring system which monitors and reports on all of Volvo machines – Volvo Uptime Center will grab and handle all alarms and error codes and alert the local dealer to provide customer service. ActiveCare also detects and prevents defects and failure even before they become a real problem and also help with scheduling of service care. Volvo ActiveCare also does and saves monthly report and fleet overview including fleet health analysis, details about utilization or even operator abuse conditions. All this data about the owner's Volvo fleet can be accessed anytime. In the case of mixed models fleet, it is able to separate data for each model. Volvo ActiveCare allows the customer to do a performance comparison of individual models, see what averages are across the entire fleet, check out a potential machine abuse conditions as far as high-speed shifts and lateral shutdowns or over speed conditions. Volvo provides all this information from a manufacturer standpoint without any need to be in the machine and plugin. Anyway, ActiveCare is not the first customer support service. Since 2007 Volvo provides telematics program CareTrack, which helps optimize fleet and increase productivity. Same as new ActiveCare provides machine specific reports with a focus on machine utilization and efficiency of operators. The main difference between these services is that CareTrack is the actual data collecting system and customer monitor the data themselves, and ActiveCare Direct is a service to help customers understand and manage that data and also provides opportunity to hand off the daily monitoring to a group of data analysts at Volvo’s Uptime Center and a proprietary system. Volvo ActiveCare Direct does not replace the web portal or Volvo CareTrack but it adds another option for those that want to get a complete view and improve the efficiency of their telematics — such as data and insights on machines and increased uptime — without time losses.Read full article

Construction machines of the future - Volvo & LEGO wheel loader ZEUX

Volvo together with LEGO® Group gets top iF Design Award for its autonomous concept - wheel loader ZEUX. This collaboration enabled to come up and test ideas for new types of construction machines from the perspective of functionality, scale, design, and also interaction. The Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX is a digital realistic prototype for a real-world autonomous construction machine. The Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX should be the next step in Volvo construction machines evolution and should bring more of the human aspect into the big construction machines. For example, the wheels contain the sensors to keep its balance, almost like human feet, which gives ZEUX traction and excellent stability at the same time. The Volvo ZEUX has also featured Ackermann steering on both axles. Thanks to this fact, this machine (the Volvo ZEUX) has even more stability in full turn. The ZEUX does not have a cab and is operated at a distance, which allows movements of the chassis that would not be possible otherwise. The Volvo wheel loader ZEUX is fully electric and equipped 150 kWh battery, so it can operate for between three to five hours. The battery of weight 1500 kg is charged by induction charging on the charging station. The operating weight of the Volvo autonomous wheel loader ZEUX is 13.000 kg and working load whole 5.000 kg. The total length of the loader is 6.100 mm, width and height are 2.500 mm and 2.300 mm. The maximal speed comes to 40 km/h. Two major features of the Volvo ZEUX are the mapping drone and the adjustable camera boom mounted on the top of the vehicle, called “the Eye”. The Eye brings a safe and intuitive way of humans and machines interaction. It shows where the vehicle’s attention is focused, so it feels like eye contact with a human. The great advantage over common autonomous vehicles is the possibility to see all the sensors concurrently, that provide navigation around both stationary and moving objects. The drone makes possible for the Volvo wheel loader ZEUX to become aware of things around it and which are out of its immediate view. Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX has become real thanks to Volvo Construction Equipment in cooperation with LEGO® Technic designers and a group of kids.Read full article

The Cooperation of Volvo CE, Telia and Ericsson resulted in the launching of Sweden's first 5G network for industrial use. It happened in Volvo CE’s facility in Eskilstuna. This makes Volvo CE one of the first manufacturers in the world testing 5G technology for autonomous machines. The 5G technology has extremely short response times, high capacity, and a high level of accessibility to the mobile network and is 1000 times faster than 4G. This opens the door to higher efficiency, lower costs and reduced risks. 5G can help Volvo CE on the way to zero emissions, zero accidents and zero unplanned stops. A massive load of data needs to be processed in a very short time to have a reliable remote-controlled machine and the 5G technology could deliver that and makes it simpler and safer. The 5G network is important for the further development of remote control solutions. It will be tested on conventional Volvo wheel loaders but also on the HX2 autonomous, battery-electric load carrier which is a prototype.Read full article

A second high-reach pattern has a 26m maximum pin height while using a larger 5 tonnes maximum tool. The digging boom set with 4.4m extension allows for an 18m pin height. All components are possible to configure – straight-straight for high reach, straight-bent for better center-of-gravity and extended forward safe working area, and bent-bent – for underground work. In a comparison with another popular Volvo demolition model - EC700C HR high-reach excavator, which has a 32 meter maximum pin height, the EC750E HR has about 50% greater lifting capacities that are over the side and 35% higher over end. The EC750E HR excavator has 44% more tool weight capacity with its tallest boom. Moreover, EC750E HR is 10% more fuel efficient and is Tier 4 Final-compliant. Compared to the Volvo EC750E which is the predecessor and inspiration for the EC750E HR, has the new machine more stable undercarriage that’s 533 millimeters longer and 864 millimeters wider. Also, the undercarriage is hydraulically extendable with a working range which is now whole 360-degree. The retractable undercarriage of the EC750E HR has an easy-to-remove track frames and the ability to self-disassemble/reassemble, which allows fast moving between worksites. The Volvo Care Cab provides a comfortable and spacious environment for the operator during any high reach demolition. The cab can be tilt up to 30 degrees which provides better visibility for example while working several stories above ground level. Also, a dust suppression system and camera on the demolition arm ensure clear images on the in-cab display. The Volvo Care Cab has also a frame-mounted Falling Object Guard (FOG) and side impact protection (SIPS). The Volvo EC750E HR demolition excavator has featured a real-time Total Moment Indicator as standard. It contains an effective load control system, angle sensors on the boom and pressure sensors on the main cylinder which continuously calculate the load moment status. This information is graphically produced on the in-cab display together with visual and audible warnings. These high-reach excavators are, same as all Volvo products, backed up with a dealer network.Read full article

Already at the beginning of the year, the new EU Stage V emissions regulation came into force for some engines. Currently, however, this only applies to engines with an output of less than 56 kW and more than 130 kW. In this area, the engines of Volvo CE are already considered as leaders. For the engines which are in the power range between 56 and 130 kW, the new regulation will come into force on January 01, 2020. Thus, the regulation is mandatory for all engines for mobile machinery from the agricultural and construction industries, material handling and municipalities and road service. The new emissions standard has brought us closer to US standards, which prevents further distortion of competition. In contrast to Stage IV, Stage V also applies to diesel engines with less than 19 kW and more than 560 kW. It also affects gasoline engines from 19 kW. Another novelty is that it does not force you to replace old engines. Instead, a conversion to the new level is possible. The new emission regulations also set strict limits for the number of particles, making a diesel particulate filter virtually mandatory. The new emissions standard certainly has a positive influence on various aspects. For example, Volvo CE's Optimized Performance and Return on Investment (ROI) with its new Tier V compliant model series. That ensures more productivity. In addition, fuel consumption and maintenance costs are reduced, resulting in a reduction in operating costs. Furthermore, the aspect of sustainability is not negligible. Compliance with the new regulations will reduce emissions, which will help protect the environment.Read full article

Volvo CE decided to stop new diesel engine-based development for compact excavators EC15 and EC27 and compact wheel loaders L20 and L28 and in 2020 Volvo CE will start to launch these excavators and wheel loaders in an electric version. First machines will be shown at bauma 2019 exhibition. Volvo CE says with this move they will become the first construction equipment manufacturer starting the electric future in compact machine range. Volvo CE is focusing on electromobility trying to fulfill its commitment of ‘Building Tomorrow’ concept and bring sustainable solutions. For larger machines, the diesel power source remains still the most appropriate. Volvo CE already introduced its prototype of fully electric compact excavator EX2 delivering zero emissions and 10 times lower noise levels than the non-electric version of the compact excavator. The combustion engine has been replaced with two lithium ion batteries (totaling 38 KWh), which allow operating the machine for 8 hours in an intense application, such as digging the compact ground. The hydraulic system was replaced with an electric system. Removing the combustion engine and hydraulic system reduced the cooling needs which led to lower noise. This EX2 prototype is only meant for research not for industrialization. Another zero emission Volvo CE machine is fully electric compact wheel loader LX2. This is also model only for research and not for commercial use. As other research machines can be mentioned HX2 autonomous, battery-electric load carrier, the LX1 hybrid wheel loader, and the EX1 cable-connected excavator.Read full article

The new compact crawler excavator EC75D is constructed to meet needs especially of the Chinese market and it will aim at Chinese customers. The seven-ton crawler excavator EC75D is the biggest excavator in its class. Because of the large size, when the track length is 2,9m and overall width is 2,23m, the excavator can use a bigger bucket than similar machines in the same class, therefore, is more productive. The tensile steel boom and arm are attached to the superstructure at the side of the cab for better visibility and stability. The wider and longer undercarriage ensures not only the stability but also better lifting capacity together with optimal working range when digging reach on ground is 6,19m and maximum digging depth is 4,15m. The Volvo engine D2.6D with power 41kW help to deliver high digging force, e.g. bucket breakout force is 56kN. The 145l diesel tank can be filled within four minutes with electric pump from ground level. Volvo CE focuses on how to get higher performance with less fuel. An automatic idling system is one of the solutions which reduces engine speed when the controls are inactive for five seconds. The Volvo EC75D crawler excavator has a great tractive force and is able to get over rough terrain and climb the gradients. Volvo CE also cares about operator safety and comfort. The spacious cab is surrounded with large expanses of glass, the adjustable operator seat with headrest and seat belt are among standard equipment. The I-ECU monitor provides operator with all the machine information. RPM control enables the operator to adjust engine rpm in any application and maximize fuel efficiency and machine performance. Volvo CE says the excavator maintenance should not be complicated. That is why the EC75D engine compartment is accessible via engine hood which can be fully opened. For Volvo customers, there is a support number which they can call 24/7 and they will be transferred to the local dealer. Part of Customer Support Agreements are total repairs and maintenance or inspection program. The VCADS Pro (Volvo Computer Aided Diagnostic System Professional) makes it easy to control the machine.Read full article

Volvo Construction Equipment shows that connectivity brings different benefits. For example, new jobs have already been created and are still being created, especially in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector. Furthermore, developing countries are supported. Thanks to connectivity, for example, more income can be achieved in agriculture, which helps to counteract poverty in these countries. If the network fails in crisis or disaster areas, communication is paramount. Thanks to ongoing connectivity, you will still be able to get in touch with those affected and provide them with important information about the situation. But connectivity also plays an increasingly important role for future machines. There are already considerable activities for communication between machines and servers. However, machine-to-machine communication is not as pronounced as many may expect. That's exactly what the focus is on development. The machines should communicate with each other and are always informed about where each machine is currently located on the construction site. Also, work is currently underway on the fifth mobile radio generation (5G), which offers greater bandwidth and higher capacity compared to 4G. This will probably be available from 2020. China and South Korea are already trying to introduce 5G in 2019. There are also tests on this new technology. For example, the Scandinavian telecommunications company Telia is offering a 5G partner program for Swedish companies interested in the new technology to test new business models. Among others, Volvo CE participates in it and tests 5G in combination with its remote-controlled machines and automation equipment. One goal that is pursued is to make work more secure and productive by using cellular connectivity.Read full article

The quarry machines are still mainly powered by diesel, which leads to carbon dioxide emissions. Volvo CE and Skanska are striving for a quarry, that creates 95 percent less carbon emissions, offers 25 percent less total operating costs and is safer for workers. That is why Volvo Group created a research project called Electric Site aimed to electrify every transport step in quarry and make it greener, safer and smarter. This research project involves testing new types of quarry equipment powered by electricity. It also requires new approaches to production including autonomous load carrier HX2. The HX2 is battery-electric fully autonomous load carrier, and it can detect objects near the machine, avoid them and prevent impact. It can transport material between the crushers, carry its weight in load and it charges in one minute. The load carriers are filled by a newly electrified 70-ton dual-powered prototype of excavator EX1. The base machine for EX1 is Volvo EC750 excavator and it works the same way as a standard Volvo excavator. The machine can work fully electrically on a cable, but when it has to move for longer distances, the excavator gets equipped with a diesel engine. Volvo also created the electric wheel loader prototype called LX1, which can improve fuel efficiency by up to 50%. LX1 is a hybrid wheel loader, which organizes the piles of material, and combines electric drive motors at the wheels, hydraulics driven by electricity and small diesel engine. This wheel loader prototype has 98% new parts and new machine design. The LX1 can finish the job as precisely as a L150 wheel loader that's one size larger. People will stay important in quarrying process even with developing, automation and digitalization, so the work sites needs to be safer, healthier and with less emissions. This test demonstrates that the energy costs are reduced a 70% and operator costs lessen a 40%.Read full article

Volvo Construction Equipment and LEGO® Technic with help of children worked together to create a model of an autonomous, futuristic wheel loader. This collaboration has led to number of potentially revolutionary patents. What started as a toy making fun became a model for real life construction machine. It all began in 2016 when two design leads met at the dinner and the final product was brought to toy stores in August 2018. Customers still need to wait for the real wheel loader to be introduced to the market but autonomous and electric construction machines are becoming a reality. Based on children's feedback two main unique features will be developed. The first one is the scout drone and the second one is the adaptable “camera” boom mounted on the roof of the machine, called the Eye. The Eye should simulate “eye contact”. When people want to cross the road they decide based on the contact with the driver whether it is safe to move or not. But with autonomous machine there is nobody to make a contact with. And even if the Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX will not be driving on the road it will interact with workers at the construction site. The drone is an extension of ZEUX, it can see things, find people, scan below the ground or identify different qualities of material. Also other ideas came out as a result of workshops and meetings and will be further developed. For example extendable counterweight, raising and lowering chassis or 4-wheel steering. The ZEUX is designed with four electric hub motors, one for each wheel. The wheels are full of sensor to reach great traction and stability. Because ZEUX does not have an operator cabin the chassis can be moved in ways which would not be possible with the cabin. The frame can be raised all lowered as needed. Volvo Construction Equipment claims to be one of the leading construction manufacturers and brings wide range of excavators with different features to the market. Here you can find an overview of six different excavators or excavator's technologies. The EW240E material handler is the continuation of EW210D MH concept. This wheeled excavator helps in waste and recycling industries. The operator's cabin can be lifted to up to 5m above the ground and ensure an eye-level view. The EW240E material handler can reach up to 11m forward and is equipped with limited arm to ensure there will be no collision between the cab and the grapple. Volvo CE can adapt any excavator to the customer needs. Like when EC220D LR becomes an amphibious dredger with super long tracks, boom and arm. The Volvo EC950E is the biggest crawler excavator in Volvo CE's line up. While the EC750D excavator delivers bucket breakout force 389kN, the EC950E can deliver up to 478kN of bucket breakout force. This is why it is a big helper when working with hard and heavy materials. The Volvo excavator EC950E is very stable and able to work in challenging environments thanks to wide track gauge, long track length, a retractable undercarriage, and an optimized counterweight. The ECR18E compact excavator was first introduced at INTERMAT Paris in April this year. This small machine can fit into very tight spaces and yet not collide with any obstacles thanks to the ultra-short tail. The ECR18E has the shortest radius in the Volvo range. This Volvo compact excavator is easy to maintain and designed for low cost of ownership to suite to the needs of rental businesses. Demolition helper EC700CHR can be equipped with high-reach equipment same as with standard boom-and-arm. It can be changed quickly thanks to hydraulic modular joint, Volvo says the transformation can be done in 30 minutes. This brings higher utilisations to its owner. Volvo CE does not only manufacture the machines but also develops technologies which make machine work easier and more effective. Example of this kind of technology is Volvo Co-Pilot with different types of Assist such as Load Assist, Compact Assist, Pave Assist and Dig Assist when the last one is for excavators. The Volvo Co-pilot was first introduced at bauma 2016. The Dig Assist brings more accuracy and allows to finish digging tasks in shorter time. It grants more safety because it is not necessary to leave the cab to check the grades and levels. Also the Dig Assist is equipped with audio and visual alerts. Volvo's system gives the operator real-time, 3D view of f the machine's movements on the 10-inch high-resolution touch screen. It is intuitive and easy-to-use.Read full article

While the launch of 5G mobile technologies for commercial use is planned for 2020, Volvo CE together with mobile operator Telia Company and Ericsson are already testing this technology. With speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second, 5G is supposed to be as much as 1000 times faster than 4G. It will be possible to transport more data in less time with higher reliability which brings opportunity for autonomous and remote-controlled machines development. 5G Technology should provide lower latency when latency is the time that passes between sending the information and receiving it by the user. Especially for mining sector it would be a huge step forward. It takes long time to ventilate after blasting rocks before it is safe for operator to enter. Eliminating human factor would bring more safety and productivity. Volvo Construction Equipment will test all the network possibilities in Eskilstuna, Sweden by creating a local cellular network at its facility. Volvo CE doesn't partner with Telia Company for the first time but they already worked together on testing of a concept remote-control wheel loader capable of operating deep underground. This project was named Digitalization Project of the Year at the Telecom Gala. 5G Technology could push this concept even further because it could solve the problems with network delays. The delay between the wheel loader and above-ground controls needs to be minimal to ensure the safety and productivity. Remote technology could also change the wheel loader design as there will be no need for operator cab which will bring less weight.Read full article

In Arkhangelsk region, north of St. Petersburg in Russia, where are many areas impossible to reach by road, there is Arkhsplav timber company struggling to keep the pace with timber industry growth. Before that the timbers were brought down by the old-fashioned way using floating cranes but the cost was increasing. Until they asked Volvo Construction Equipment for help. Volvo filled customer’s needs by EC250 crawler excavator with specially modified 20m boom together with L120 wheel loader, both with grapple attachments. While the Volvo wheel loader stacks the logs on the bank of the Northern Dvina River, the crawler excavator creates timber rafts. With Volvo machinery loading is much faster and all operations are for lower cost so Arkhsplav is able to send eight rafts a day instead of just two as it was before. Volvo does not forget the operator’s comfort and safety. The cab is equipped with comfortable seat from where is very good visibility and the noise levels are very low. Excavator crawler tracks make the operator safe even on the unstable ground. In the future more Volvo machines might be seen on the river banks of Northern Dvina River.Read full article
