Bulgaria – HAMMEL shreds household waste in Sofia

Within the European Union Germany is a pioneer in the area of waste recycling. More than 60% of household waste is being recycled. Due to a combination of recycling and waste incineration plants, almost all landfills in Germany are closed. Austria as well has good quote in the recycling of waste such as Germany. Also Italy and Great Britain were able to increase their quotes in recent years.

Unfortunately, especially in the recently joined EU countries such as Bulgaria and Romania there is still an enormous demand. In Bulgaria more than 70% is being deposited and the recycling rate is very low. This is mainly due to the lack of modern technologies for waste disposal and recycling.

In order to advance the waste management, the municipal region of Sofia and the Actor & Helector group signed in December 2013 a contract to build a waste-biofuel plant. This project was funded by the EU and will process approximately ¾ of household waste in Sofia.

HAMMEL Recyclingtechnik GmbH is part of this great project. The HAMMEL primary shredder VB 650 E is universally used for the shredding of household waste and is equipped with an electric motor. So over 400,000 tons of waste are being shred per year. The shredding of the material is carried out using two slow-speed, interlocking tool shafts. Following the homogeneous final grain can be optimally processed. The biodiesel produced by the entire plant is used for a thermal power station, which will enormously reduce the consumption of oil and gas.

With these and similar facilities throughout Bulgaria a foundation is set for the waste management in the following years to increase the recycling rate and to approximately achieve the required EU objectives.
