Terex Trucks one of first globally to achieve new quality standard

Motherwell-based manufacturer of rigid and articulated trucks, Terex Trucks, has announced it has achieved certification to the newly revised quality management system standard ISO 9001:2015, one of the first firms globally to do so.

Approved by LRQA (Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd), ISO 9001:2015 is a certified quality management system for organisations who want to consistently provide products and services that meet the needs of their customers and stakeholders.

The latest edition of ISO 9001, ISO's flagship quality management system standard, was published in September 2015 and has been revised to take into account today’s dynamic and globally interconnected world.

The new quality management system took Terex Trucks four years to successfully implement with quality manager Martin Dolan leading the process and rewriting the company’s management strategy to achieve certification.

Commenting, quality manager at Terex Trucks Martin Dolan said: “ISO 9001 is the world’s most popular management system standard. Being one of the first companies, and the first in our industry with LRQA, to attain certification is a testament to the extensive investment we’ve made in quality improvements, people and facilities.

“Our aim was to improve product, process and service quality, increase customer satisfaction levels and improve productivity, therefore reducing costs. Gaining this certification will also provide us with a competitive advantage in situations or industries where it is not a contractual obligation or expectation. Our performance statistics confirm that we have successfully delivered on this aim and we will continue to build on this in the future through the deployment of our quality management system.”

Terex Trucks worked closely with Ideagen, an information management software provider with a Scottish office based in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire. For over four years Terex Trucks and Ideagen have been adapting its Q-Pulse quality management solution to enable Terex Trucks to be one of the first to achieve certification. The system allows the transfer of live data to manage risk, making the process a lot more efficient and dynamic as any errors can be picked up and fixed in a timely manner.

Staff training was a major aspect of the certification and has been a huge success with all employees in the factory now trained on the sections before and after their own, driving further quality improvements.

Martin Dolan continued: “Successfully transitioning to the new ISO 9001:2015 standard is a huge achievement for all involved and will help to position Terex Trucks as leaders in our field for quality.

The new quality management system has changed the ethos of the whole business with all employees now having a better understanding of our customers’ requirements.   It has been great for staff morale and is helping us develop as a world class business.”

Terex Trucks is also working towards achieving ISO 14001:2015, an environmental management system used to manage environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner, and is expected to achieve certification in January 2016.
