Turning waste into fuels using efficient, environmentally friendly system solutions from Putzmeister

Putzmeister are the experts when it comes to designing and building plants that employ sophisticated systems engineering. The storage and use of sludge and high-density materials is performing an increasingly important role in the diverse field of environmental technology. The key component of all such systems is provided by Putzmeister pumps, which are capable of pumping materials with a high solids content. These reliable and robust pumps can handle foreign bodies in the material that are up to two thirds of the size of the pipeline's diameter. Other components are also used in addition to silos, bunkers, mixing units, pipelines with accessories and process controllers.

Putzmeister plans and engineers material conveying and transporting solutions that employ process technology; it delivers items of machinery, assembles and starts them up at the customer's premises, and even offers a comprehensive service after handing the system over. In Putzmeister, operators benefit from a partner that boasts both experience and expertise, and that will accept ultimate responsibility for everything.

Tuen Mun, Hong Kong

2014 saw the commissioning of the world's largest sewage sludge incineration plant in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. The facility is able to process up to 2000 tons of sewage sludge daily, giving it twice the capacity of the previous record holder – the Lippendorf power plant in Leipzig, Germany, which has also been fitted out with Putzmeister equipment.

A system supplied entirely by Putzmeister takes care of collecting, conveying, mixing and metering: Six reception bunkers with sliding frames and discharge augers, three mixing augers, six KOS high-density solids pumps and metering units convey the sewage sludge – up to 2000 tons of it a day – into the incinerator. The machinery is extremely reliable and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Putzmeister took charge of every single aspect of this ambitious project, from planning the system to delivering and assembling it, right through to providing service and replacement parts.

Avedøre, Denmark

As part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, the Avedøre power plant in Copenhagen will be converted from burning coal to burning biomass. Adding fly ash to the fuel mixture helps to optimise the combustion process and extends the service life of the boilers used.

This is where the services offered by Putzmeister as a system provider will come into play, for the planning, supply, installation and commissioning of the wet ash supply system. This is ideal for the customer, as the entire system will be provided from a single source.

Commissioning is planned for autumn 2016.
