As far back as 1858 the English engineer Alexander Halkett had the idea to work on the fields using a 9.1 m wide, steam-driven multi-equipment carrier. The "steam cultivator" runs on rails on the outside and agricultural machinery such as a harrow works in between the rails.
It was ahead of its time but the idea was born. In 2013 Grimme's subsidiary ASA-LIFT in Denmark started to develop the wide-span tractor WS 9600, which runs with a customer in Denmark. 3-point lifters are attached to standard agricultural machinery and fitted to the wide-span tractor which is driven by two diesel engines. It is possible to alter the WS 9600 within 3 hours to an onion loader with 15 ton capacity.
