DEUTZ-FAHR introduces Driver Extended Eye

DLG Silver Medal for Camera Safety System

There is an appalling number of accidents due to reduced visibility of tractors with ever growing dimensions. In Germany alone 2,065 accidents were registered in 2014, 42 of them fatal. Now, DEUTZ-FAHR abolishes the „blind spot“ by presenting a camera safety system that will significantly decrease the risk of visibility induced accidents. Whilst already well-known in the automotive sector, the tractor specialists from Lauingen now are the first to introduce this system to agribusiness. Consequently, the DLG awarded a silver medal for innovative product improvements.

Even the most seasoned drivers know the scenario: One becomes distracted for a moment and in the meantime a child moves to an area of the tractor the driver cannot oversee. He starts the tractor and the unthinkable happens. The child is harmed. In the future, this can be avoided by installing cameras at the tip of the bonnet as they monitor the area of the tractor not visible for the driver. The image is transferred inside the cabin to the iMonitor 2.0 and the driver is warned by acousto-optical signals if there is a person dangerously close (passive prevention). Moreover, the system automatically prevents the driver from moving the tractor (active prevention).

Another scenario: A driver cannot detect incoming traffic at an intersection, due to obstacles that reduce visibility. Thus, he has to come forward until he is able to see properly and therefore already has had to move the bonnet right into the crossroads. In contrast, the camera safety system enables him to see 180° to the left and to the right. Consequently, he notices incoming traffic significantly sooner and can move more controlled into the intersection.

In total, three cameras are integrated into the bonnet, one in the front and two at the left and right side. A central elaboration unit broadcasts all video signals to the iMonitor 2.0. A „tractor supervising system“ prompts the active tractor functions, e.g. manages the transmission. In addition to the safety advantages, the front camera provided an optimised view to the front lift and supports the driver when mounting or dismounting implements. In the future, it will be easier to automatise further safety functions of the tractor, due to the advanced technological level of the DRIVER EXTENDED EYES System, e.g. reducing speed, braking or changing the lane automatically.

At this year’s Agritechnica, the system will be officially presented to the public.
