Scania at Bauma 2013 in Munich: Scania trucks and engines fit for hard work and with the latest emission technology

Scania musters several examples of its comprehensive product range for construction and mining at its combined stand at Bauma 2013. Scania was a pioneer, starting sales of the latest emission technology already in 2011. Some of the trucks meet the Euro 6 emission standard and the industrial engines are ready for Stage IV and Tier 4 final, standards which come into force from 2014. Gensets, field workshops and mining activities are also highlighted. Euro 6 truck engines will also be on display.

Three of the six trucks on display already comply with Euro 6, benefiting from the compact design of Scania's aftertreatment system. The 9-, 13- and 16-litre ranges of industrial engines are now all available as Stage IV/Tier 4 final. Scania's new heavyhaulage concept includes tractors capable of pulling GTWs of up to 180 tonnes with a standard Scania transmission, or even 250 tonnes in special conditions.

Also on display is a Scania Field Workshop module, designed for easy servicing in remote areas beyond the reach of Scania's 1,600-strong global service network. A Scania Genset is shown for the first time in Europe, ready to provide power wherever needed.

Scania Mining is also present at Bauma for the first time. This new business area has been established to provide Scania products and know-how to the rapidly growing mining industry.

TRUCKS ON DISPLAY INDOOR (stand 201, hall B4)

Scania R 730 8x4 – 180/250-tonne heavy-haulage tractor with standard transmission
Scania now permits heavy-haulage operation up to a gross train weight of 180 tonnes (250 in special conditions) using a standard Scania transmission with standard clutch. The vehicle has the 16.4-litre Scania V8 engine, which produces 3,500 Nm of torque, complies with Euro 5/EEV and is compatible with up to 100% biodiesel. The standard Scania 12+2-speed overdrive gearbox is equipped with Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging, standard automatic clutch and Scania Retarder. The R-series Topline cab provides the ultimate in space and comfort. Based on components from Scania’s modular product range, the vehicle has two 9- tonne front axles and a 26-tonne tandem bogie, all with air suspension and drum brakes. All servicing can be handled via the Scania service network, which means significant savings in initial investment, as well as gains in repair and maintenance cost and uptime. The heavy-haulage rack behind the cab is built by Laxå Special Vehicles.

Scania G 480 6x4 Euro 6 – one-way Meiller tipper
The 10 cu m one-way tipper has bodywork from Meiller and a payload of up to 15 tonnes. Scania’s G-series day cab provides a perfect environment for construction work. Parabolic springs and drum brakes are used both on the 9-tonne front axle and on the 21-tonne tandem bogie.

The Euro 6 engine is the top-output 13-litre inline six with impressive driveability thanks to generous torque delivery from very low engine revs. The manual Scania 12+2-speed gearbox has overdrive for comfortable cruising at road speed, while providing ample low-speed power thanks to the crawler gears. Scania's compact Euro 6 silencer unit, containing all the equipment necessary for aftertreatment, does not encroach on bodywork space.

Scania G 440 4x4 Euro 6 – ready-to-use AWD semitrailer tipper
All-wheel-drive tractor ready to use ex-factory, including fifth wheel and wet kit – power take-off and hydraulics – ready to connect and go. The front and rear axles are rated at 7.5 and 11.5 tonnes respectively and are fitted with drum brakes. The cab is a medium-high Scania G-series sleeper. Parabolic springs at the front and air at the rear.

The engine is an efficient and torquey 13-litre Euro 6 inline six that drives through a 12+2-speed range-splitter gearbox Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging, Scania Retarder and a 2-speed transfer box. The vehicle can be built on a wheelbase as short as 3,550 mm thanks to the compact dimensions of Scania's Euro 6 silencer.

Scania G 480 8x4 rear-steer Euro 6 – 24-tonne hook-lift
Ready to put in operation on delivery, this vehicle is complete with factory-fitted 24-tonne hook-lift bodywork from JOAB. The 9-tonne front axle is air suspended and the air suspended 28-tonne bogie comprises double-drive axles with a hydraulically steered tag axle behind for maximum manoeuvrability. All axles have electronically controlled disc brakes.

It has the most powerful of Scania's 13-litre six-cylinder Euro 6 engines combined with Scania Opticruise fully automated gearchanging and the Scania Retarder. The cab is a G-series sleeper.

Scania P 400 8x4 – 9 cu m lightweight mixer
One of the lightest four-axle mixers on the market, this vehicle shines with its 13-litre Euro 5 EGR engine, which operates without the need for additives and is compatible with up to 100% biodiesel, 12+2-speed range-splitter gearbox and engine-driven each has a capacity of 7.1 tonnes and the lightweight bogie 21 tonnes. Parabolic springs and disc brakes are used all-round. The P-series day cab is light and compact, but still has space for a rest bunk, if required.

Emission control system
For Stage IV and Tier 4 in 2014, the combined use of Scania EGR and Scania SCR makes cleaning so effective that Scania can manage without the added bulk and complexity of a particulate filter. These technologies also have great potential for future development.

Global service network
Scania's global network comprises more than 1,600 service workshops, where industrial engines are an integral part. A large number of these can be reached 365 days a year, thus ensuring high uptime and excellent operating economy.

Shared components and systems between the different engine series reduce costs for parts stocking and maximise availability. In addition, training of staff is facilitated by the commonality between the engine series and the use of common tools and diagnostics systems. Many of Scania's OEM customers also provide full servicing for
Scania engines.

PRODUCTS ON DISPLAY OUTDOOR (stand 279, outside hall B4)

Scania P 400 6x4 – the ultimate on and off-road tipper
Supplied complete ex-factory, the gross vehicle weight of these 16 cu m three-axle tippers is 39 tonnes and the payload a healthy 24 tonnes, with capacity to spare for the occasional overload. High load capacity and exceptional manoeuvrability makes this truck a flexible and attractive alternative to heavy dumpers on an off-road work site. Drum brakes are fitted all round and the short Scania P-series cab is used to optimise cargo space. It is also available as 8x4 with a GVW of 56 tonnes. More than 4,000 of these 6x4 and 8x4 tippers have been supplied to Eurasian markets.

Scania Mining
Scania's new business area provides products and services that cover a wide variety of needs in the mining industry. Competitive solutions are available for different types of in-pit and outbound transport with Scania trucks, Scania power for machinery, crew transport with Scania buses, servicing both for Scania products and other makes, as well as electric power supply from Scania gensets. Field workshops are a vital part of this offering.

Scania Field Workshop
In the outside exhibition area, an example is shown of the Scania's approach to onsite servicing and repairs for vehicles and engines in remote areas. A new facility can be up-and-running in the middle of nowhere within a few months. Eight specially designed container modules are combined to suit the site’s needs for advanced technical support, maintenance and repairs. This will maximise uptime and productivity for the site operator.

The Scania offering also includes support vehicles such as water tankers, trucks for dust control, lubrication trucks for servicing loading machinery, buses for crew transport, etc. Thanks to Scania's modular product system, with common parts and components between product ranges, servicing other Scania powered machinery can readily be handled.

Scania Genset

Scania Gensets, the latest addition to Scania’s product offering will be launched in February 2013 at the Middle East Electricity Exhibition in Dubai. The range will consist of open or canopy versions with a power range spanning from 250-600 kVA at 50Hz or 280-665 at 60 Hz. Units can also be run in parallel for higher outputs.
