The VÖGELE wheeled paver SUPER 1603-3 with AB 480 TV Extending Screed

Innovative paving technology is not a matter of size, as proven by the SUPER 1603-3 from VÖGELE. A wheeled paver, this machine can go virtually anywhere. Thanks to its compact dimensions and Pivot Steer, the "Dash 3" machine in the Universal Class is highly manœuvrable, meaning it is suitable for a wide variety of applications. The VÖGELE ErgoPlus 3 operating concept, with its numerous convenient and automated functions, makes the paver especially easy and safe to operate. It goes without saying that this compact powerhouse also comes with all the other "Dash 3" features. In addition to the AB 500 TV, the AB 480 TV Extending Screed can now also be paired with the SUPER 1603-3.

VÖGELE EcoPlus reduces emissions

The machine concept of the "Dash 3" generation focuses entirely on "lower consumption – lower emissions – lower costs". The VÖGELE EcoPlus low-emissions package combines a number of individual measures that distinctly reduce the fuel consumption and noise levels of "Dash 3" pavers:

Splitter gearbox

When the paver is stationary, e.g. while waiting, all hydraulic pumps needed for "traction", "conveyors and augers" as well as "compaction" are automatically disengaged after about one minute. This function cuts fuel consumption considerably. Reducing trailing load also makes it significantly easier to start the paver at low ambient temperatures.

Variable-speed fan

The variable-speed fan automatically adapts to the engine load and the ambient temperature. The fan is driven via a viscous coupling. In contrast to a hydraulic drive, this type of fan drive stands out through its considerably greater energy efficiency and much lower noise levels.

Controlled hydraulic oil temperature circuit

A bypass circuit allows the hydraulic oil to reach its optimum operating temperature very quickly. This in turn permits rapid, fuel-saving operation of the paver. If the oil temperature rises above the optimum level of 50 – 70 °C, a bypass diverts the oil through the cooler assembly.

PaveDock Assistant – the clever link between feed vehicle and paver

A constant supply of mix is essential to produce a level and high-quality pavement. That is why VÖGELE developed the PaveDock Assistant for their "Dash 3" generation of pavers. This exceedingly efficient system greatly facilitates communication between the paver operator and the driver of the feed vehicle, and it ensures that the mix is supplied to the paver safely and without jolts.

Signal lights on the paver and the associated controls on the paver operator's ErgoPlus 3 console are key components of the PaveDock Assistant communication system. The paver has two signal lights mounted on the right and left of the hardtop. With these lights, the paver operator can give the driver of the feed vehicle unmistakable signals, indicating what needs to be done (e.g. reverse, stop, dump mix). Having two lights, each in an elevated position on the machine's hardtop, ensures that all signals are clearly visible to the driver of the feed vehicle from all angles of approach.

Greater mobility with Pivot Steer

The Pivot Steer steering brake lowers the speed of the rear inner wheel on wheeled "Dash 3" pavers, reducing the turning radius of the SUPER 1603-3 to a minimum of 3.5m. The function can be activated in "Job Site" mode for both forward and reverse travel, greatly increasing the manœuvrability of the machines on cramped job sites.

Improved operation with ErgoPlus 3

The user-friendly ErgoPlus operating system, which has already proved its practical value on job sites, has been enhanced with useful supplementary features for the "Dash 3" generation. It is now equipped with a new, high-contrast colour display ensuring brilliant readability even in poor lighting conditions. The graphic design of the user interface complies with the latest requirements made on product design. The self-explanatory symbols allow the operator to work intuitively. What is more, the paver operator's console and seat and the screed consoles can be adjusted even more easily to the operators' needs. A side panelling affords effective protection from the wind and rain.

Automated processes with AutoSet Plus

AutoSet Plus offers two handy automatic functions: the Repositioning and Transport function makes it easy to continue the work when changing between job site sections or after the paver has been transported. Just push the "Execute" button and the auger and hydraulic hopper front can be raised to the uppermost position. The screed and tow point rams are brought into their transport position. The screed is also hydraulically locked in the transport position. Briefly reversing the conveyors prevents material from being spilled. When the paver has been relocated, everything is restored to the previously saved working position by pressing the button again. This ensures that no settings are lost when changing back and forth between "Pave" and "Job Site" modes. It also effectively prevents any damage to the machine. Each function can be deactivated separately via the ErgoPlus 3 menu.

The automatic function for Paving Programs, on the other hand, allows the paver operator to store specific programs in the paving process. The values for the compacting systems (tamper and vibrator speed), the height of the auger, the position of the tow point rams, the pressure for Screed Assist and the pave speed can be saved on the display of the paver operator's console. The set crown and the temperature of the screed are also recorded. This information is rounded off with further details about the material used, the layer thickness and the pave width. Once stored, the program can then be retrieved and reused whenever needed.

Cutting-edge drive concept

The SUPER 1603-3 is equipped with a modern, powerful and totally reliable diesel engine. A large cooler assembly ensures that the power unit always delivers its full output. With innovative air routing and a variable-speed fan, temperatures are continually maintained within the optimum range, significantly extending the service life of both the diesel engine and the hydraulic oil. A further advantage is that the machine can operate without difficulty in all climate regions worldwide.

The high-traction wheeled SUPER 1603-3 paver is optionally available with all-wheel drive (6 x 6). It offers an ideal combination of high paving performance and maximum mobility during transport.

The screed system

The SUPER 1603-3 can be combined with two VÖGELE Extending Screeds: the AB 500 TV and now also the AB 480 TV. Both come with an extremely sturdy, precision single-tube telescoping system for quick adjustment of the pave width with millimetre accuracy. Tamper (T) and vibrator (V) functions achieve outstanding density values. Both compacting systems are installed across the screed’s full pave width.

From its basic width of 2.55m, the AB 480 TV is hydraulically infinitely variable up to 4,8m. The pave width can be increased to 6.3m with 75cm bolt-on extensions.

The AB 500 TV is hydraulically infinitely variable to pave widths from 2.55m to 5m. It achieves a maximum width of 7m with bolt-on extensions.
