Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) is pleased to announce the arrival of the Kobelco ED160BR-5 –the latest generation of the highly respected ED160 Blade Runner –available from the growing European Kobelco dealer network.

The new ED160 BR-5 further enhances Kobelco’s long-term commitment to producingquality and innovative construction and earthmoving machineryto provide exceptional working performance.

The previous model ED160BR-3 gained its reputation as a dual-purpose machine by having the ability to excavateand dozerterrain with remarkable precision and work performance. With the arrival of the new ED160BR-5,that reputation is set to be considerably enhanced through anincrease in working efficiency throughimprovedfuel economy; a result of being fully compliant with the latest Stage 4 (Tier IV) exhaust emissions regulations.

Clean means green with the newED160BR-5.Further advancements in ‘clean technology’ has led to the integration of a dieseloxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. Matched to anIsuzu four-cylinder, turbo-charged, (3,000cc) diesel engine, the overall peak power outputis increased byapproximately 5.4% to 78 kW (ISO 14396)when compared with the previous model. The DEF/AdBlue required forthe post-exhaust gas system is contained byalarge capacity (33.9 Lt) tank to reduce fill-up downtime. The use of Kobelco’s innovative iNDr system also means the ED160BR-5is quiet in operation, not just in working areas but also the operator cab noise is significantly reduced.iNDr’s primary function is to filter dust from the cooling air reaching the engine and, therefore, raisesthe reliability level even further.

It’s all in the name with the ED160BR-5.The ED acronym denotes Elevated Dozer, while BR means Blade Runner in reference to the ED160BR-5’s dozing capability with its hydraulically adjustable dozer blade. The raised height of the ED160BR-5’scab allows an unrestricted and safe view of the dozer blade, whether digging or dozing.Aiding site work is aground clearance figure of 455mm from lower section of track to undercarriage, tall enough for working across many varieties of terrain. Curved track shoes further promote the ED160BR-5’s agilityand ability to work in tight working areas in conjunction with the short radius (SR)design.

Performance where it matters makes the ED160BR-5 a formidable working tool in all applications. A 5.2% increase in digging volume per hour (compared to the previous model) in H-mode has also been realised in order to raise working efficiency. The drawbar pulling force is rated at 196 kN.The dozer blade action features Power, Angle and Tilt (PAT) adjustability by way of an operator controlled single lever. This means not only can terrain or material be dozed forward but also 25-degrees to the right or left to keep clear the route ahead. For slope grading and ditches, for example, the blade can be tilted 455mm on both sides. The 3,260mm wide blade is foldable at two points: with the blade ‘wings’ folded the width reduces to 2,460mm. Coupled with the ED160BR-5’s narrow gauge, transportation to and from site is easily achieved.

Constant development has led to further updates on the ED160BR-5. A largerfuel filter featuresa water separator, while a hydraulic fluid clog detection systemlocated at the oil filter is standard fitment and, via the in-cab multi-display, warns the operator of any variance in oil pressuredue to blockage. The cab itself has received the latest generation updates to make this area supremely operator friendly interms of comfort and unhindered working views –and this is with a new 33.9-litre DEF/AdBlue in place. Reconfiguration of components within the upper deck hasenabled this tank to be placed at the front right section allowingeasy accessat refill time.

Commenting on the introduction of the ED160BR-5, Product Marketing Manager, Peter Stuijt, said: “The role of the ED160BR-5 is simply a multi-purpose one. From one machine an operator can clear an area, excavate, fill and level to a high finish. In terms ofapplication, its uses across a live working site or rural areas are many and varied and can save customers in terms of time and, therefore, cost.

“Further savings are of course gained with the increase in working performance and efficiency –attributes that Kobelco continuously strives to deliver along with reliability thanks to over 80 years’ of experience in quality excavator design and manufacture.”
