Young architects win internships with top architects around the world in the Archi-World Academy Awards

Many of the world´s leading architects will be meeting up at BAU 2013. One of the highlights at the "World´s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, Systems" is without doubt a panel discussion taking place on Wednesday, January 16, in the forum in Hall C2. Below we present you the panel members, among them names like Daniel Libeskind, Françoise-Hélène Jourda and Christoph Ingenhoven. The panel members are also jury members in the Archi-World Academy Awards, a competition organized jointly by BAU and the Archi-World architecture portal which has attracted entries from well over 1000 young architects from more than 100 different countries. The 12 winners will be announced on January 16, directly after the panel discussion. Their prize: a six-month internship in one of the world´s top architectural practices.
Daniel Libeskind
Born in 1946 in Poland, US-American Daniel Libeskind is today regarded as one of the foremost international architects and urban planners. In 2002 Libeskind won the open architectural competition for the new One World Trade Center in New York. His design formed the basis for the plans of architect David Childs who is today building the center. Other reference projects by Libeskind include the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück, the Denver Art Museum and the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester. In summer 2002 Libeskind staged his first opera – Saint Francis of Assisi at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Christoph Ingenhoven
Christoph Ingenhoven studied at the RWTH in Aachen and at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Since 1985 he has run his own architectural practice in Düsseldorf – ingenhoven architects. Ingenhoven attracted attention for his design for the main station in Stuttgart. Other projects include the Lufthansa Aviation Center in Frankfurt, the RWE Tower in Essen and the HDI-Gerling headquarters in Hannover. In addition to his architectural work, Christoph Ingenhoven also gives lectures around the world.
Françoise-Hélène Jourda
Françoise-Hélène Jourda has made a name for herself well beyond the borders of her home country of France, both as an architect and author. She is particularly committed to sustainable development. Born in 1955 in Lyon, Jourda graduated in 1979 from the Ecole d´Architecture de Lyon. She founded her own architectural practice in Paris and teaches in Vienna. In partnership with her husband Gilles Perraudin she has designed and built many projects. Among her built works are the architectural school at Lyon and the Parilly metro station in Lyon. One of her ongoing projects is the concept for a tourist zone in Tifnit, Morocco.
Mario Cucinella
Italian-born Cucinella founded Mario Cucinella Architects in Paris in 1992, opening a subsidiary in Bologna in 1999. His focus is on sustainable building, for which he has won many awards in international architectural competitions. Cucinella also teaches at the University of Nottingham. Among his completed projects are the Sino Italian Ecological Building in Beijing, the new town hall in Bologna, Villejuif-Leo Lagrange station on the Paris Metro, the ferry terminal in Otranto and the headquarters of iGuzzini Illuminazione in Recanati. In 2012 he founded the non-profit organization Building Green Future.
Juhani Uolevi Pallasmaa
Born in Finland, Juhani Pallasmaa is professor of architecture at Helsinki University of Technology. He is also director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture. His architectural work integrates cultural, theoretical and philosophical components, alongside the purely architectural design. One of his buildings is the Kamppi Center in Helsinki, built between 2003 and 2006. His book The Eyes of the Skin – Architecture and the Senses became a classic and is regarded worldwide as a standard text book on architectural theory. Pallasmaa is a member of the International Academy of Architecture and is an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Andrey Bokov
The famous Russian architect Andrey Bokov is Vice-President of the Union of Architects of Russia, and since 1998 Director-General of the Moscow-based state unitary enterprise Mosprojekt-4. A native of Moscow and a graduate of MARCHI, Bokov started his career working in a range of design offices and scientific institutions. He has taken part in Russian and international architectural competitions and won many awards, among them for his designs for the Berlin Wall Park and for the sports hall at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. His completed projects include, for example, the experimental housing block in Nizhny Novgorod.
Shajay Bhooshan
Shajay Bhooshan works as an architect in the Computation and Design Project Group at the internationally highly regarded architectural collective of Zaha Hadid Architects. Through linking computer graphics programs and architecture, he is establishing a new approach to design.
Jean-Michel Jaspers
In partnership with John Eyers, Jean-Michel Jaspers is director of the architectural practice in Brussels founded by his father. Jaspers-Eyers Architects, one of Belgium´s foremost architectural offices, is involved in urban design, master plans, graphics and interior design, for both public and private clients. In Brussels Jaspers played a key part in the design of the Espace Nord business district, the Espace Jacqmotte and the European Union buildings. Other reference projects include the Brussels headquarters of Mercedes Benelux and the North-Galaxy-Towers, to name just a few. The practice is also engaged in eastern Europe.

About the Archi-World Academy Awards:
Surely the dream of every student of architecture is to get an internship in the practice of one of the world´s top architects, working on exciting projects in London, Paris, New York or Tokyo. The Archi-World Academy Awards, a project sponsored by BAU and ArchiWorld, is making that dream come true for 12 lucky winners.
From the start this competition aimed high: billed as the "world´s greatest competition for the architects of tomorrow", the Archi-World Academy Awards was launched in January 2011, under the leadership of Jacques Allard. Architectural students and young architects from all over the world were invited to submit energy-saving projects and concepts for the future of architecture and urban design. Well over 1,000 architectural practices from over 100 countries have taken part.
The architects submitting the 12 best entries can look forward to fame and acclaim, as well as an exciting journey into the big wide world of architecture. Star architects from around the globe, from Daniel Libeskind to Zaha Hadid, will be making up the jury and providing internships for the winners at their own architectural practices. So, anyone whose work catches the eye of Daniel Libeskind, can look forward to a six-month working placement in his New York offices – what a unique chance that is!
Jacques Allard: "From our talks with many students from all over the world, it is clear that most of them dream of getting a trainee position in one of the world´s leading architectural practices. And this gave us the idea for the Archi-World Academy Awards."
When Allard presented his idea to star architects around the world, he was welcomed with open arms. The jury reads like a "Who´s Who of Architecture". Chairman Juhani Pallasmaa, Professor of Architecture at Helsinki University of Technology and himself a leading figure in the sector, heads up an exclusive panel of VIP colleagues from around the world.
For BAU, as the world´s biggest event for planners and architects, the Academy is an ideal vehicle for raising its profile among the next generation of architects. "The architecture students of today are the BAU visitors of tomorrow. Some of them will in future be playing a major role in our forums and special shows," explained Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, the managing director at Messe München with responsibility for BAU.
The 12 winners will receive their awards on January 16, at 17:30 in Hall C2 – in the presence of Daniel Libeskind & Co.
