Last week, sustainability was highlighted with segments featuring Group President Stu Levenick discussing theimportance of remanufacturing; a look at North American Coal’s award-winning land reclamation project as well as Caterpillar Foundation President Michele Sullivan speaking about “Giving Tuesday” and finally, a look at the need fortechnical jobs skills training for workers with Building Construction Products’ Vice President Mary Bell.

Levenick explained how remanufacturing is beneficial to the customer in the first segment on December 1.

“We all know about recycling… remanufacturing is similar. We give that customer a brand new reman component. We’re bringing used cores in that aren’t very expensive and remanufacturing into a new condition,” Levenick said. “I think for an American worker it is a great opportunity to grow in a business that’s not only environmentally friendly but economically positive for the economy.”

Sullivan talked about the Caterpillar Foundation’s goal in helping communities in the second segment on December 2.

“We’re encouraging people and educating them on how to give back. It’s not just about money necessarily. What’s your talent, your skill set, your passion, your compassion? And think about how you can give back, and for your community’s sake, start working in the communities and think how the communities will benefit around the world,” Sullivan said.

On December 5, Bell was featured in a segment discussing Caterpillar’s apprenticeship programs and how the company benefits.

“The perception of manufacturing is that it’s dirty and dark and not high tech. We have a welding apprenticeship program, we have a manufacturing assembly apprenticeship program… programs that assure kids graduating from high school have the skills that we need to fuel our growth and succeed in the future,” said Bell.

The partnership with MSNBC will highlight sustainable communities and energy access in early 2015.
