On the 2nd September the CECE Secretariat had a meeting together with the European Construction Industry Association (FIEC) to discuss the upcoming revision of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
The topics discussed included digitalisation, market surveillance, format and availability of instructions, cybersecurity, the Machinery Directive Guidelines, standardisation policy and the role of harmonised standards.
We share similar points of view as both organisations believe that the Directive, as it stands, is fit for purpose and functions well in terms of placing safe products on the European Union’s Market. For example, on the challenges posed by digitalisation and new technologies, both associations believe that the current Machinery Directive’s risk assessment and risk reduction are capable of taking into consideration new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
For the next steps, the associations decided to set up an ad hoc group comprised of experts from both sides and meet again to further align their positions on a few selected topics.
