Continental has developed two green, efficiency-boosting tire concepts that are making an immediate impact on sustainability efforts: the Conti Urban Green concept tire and ContiTread EcoPlus Green concept retread.

The Conti Urban Green concept tire: greater sustainability without compromising performance

When first introduced, the Conti Urban Green concept tire was designed to allow fleets to move their operations towards greater sustainability. When designing the newest version of the Conti Urban Green concept tire, Continental tire developers focused their efforts on achieving high energy efficiency and reduced noise. A special rubber compound in the tread, a wider tire tread, and a specially optimized and exceptionally rigid profile help increase tire life and reduce rolling resistance by seven percent compared with a current-generation Conti Urban. These new gains have been achieved without compromising on the tire’s safety performance properties.

“Our Conti Urban Green concept tire can be retreaded, increasing its sustainability and extending its service life,” says Shaun Uys, Head of Replacement, Truck Tire, US. “By 2050, we want to use 100 percent sustainably produced materials in all our tire products and achieve full climate neutrality along our entire value chain.”

Managing noise frequencies for less urban environment impact

The noise behavior of the newest Conti Urban Green concept tire was also specially optimized. With the latest Conti Urban Green concept tire, noise frequencies generated have been distributed over a wider range. The broad spectrum of different frequency ranges creates a lower perceived noise level.

Compatibility with ContiConnect™ – digital tire monitoring solutions

The Conti Urban Green concept tire was designed with built-in intelligent sensors that pair with Continental’s digital tire monitoring solution, ContiConnect™. This digital tire monitoring solution allows fleets to lower emissions, conserve resources, and keep vehicles on the road with less downtime. ContiConnect™ digital tire monitoring provides fleet managers with real-time data such as tire pressure, temperature and mileage estimation so they can keep their tires running at optimal performance levels. This improves fuel efficiency, reduces maintenance and replacement costs, and maintains operator safety. The modular format of ContiConnect ™ allows it to be tailored to meet each individual customer’s needs.

ContiTread EcoPlus Green Concept Retread: extending sustainability over the complete tire lifecycle

While retreading worn out tires is a sustainable practice in its own right, the ContiTread EcoPlus Green concept retread takes it a step further. Thanks to the high content of renewable materials used in the tread, retreading with the ContiTread EcoPlus Green concept increases the overall share of sustainable materials in the tire to 90 percent. A special rubber compound, along with wider tread, and exceptionally rigid profile provide considerable reductions in rolling resistance and optimize noise emissions.

Already approved for road use and ready for series production in the near future, the Conti Urban Green concept tire contains nearly 50 percent renewable and recycled materials, while the tread itself is composed of just under 70 percent renewable materials including rapeseed oil, silica from rice husk ashes, and responsibly produced natural rubber.
