demopark + demogolf 2015: the Special Turf Show (Sonderschau Rasen) is a learning experience

Covering a comprehensive range of issues in the development and care of grass and turf, this year's demopark + demogolf offers great learning opportunities. For visitors from local authorities, and greenkeepers for golf courses and sports pitches, the Deutsche Rasengesellschaft e.V. (DRG) turf grass society and the Greenkeeper Verband Deutschland e.V. (GVD) association will be issuing certificates of attendance, which can for example be counted towards certification in the GVD professional development programme.

Monoculture varieties

Varieties of common meadow grass, a whole range of varieties of sheep's fescue, red fescue and tall fescue and over 50 varieties of ryegrass have been sown from the Bundessortenamt range. The new varieties of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum var. Westerwoldicum) should also be of great interest to visitors, and the newly cultivated perennial ryegrass with runners is an exciting development. These new varieties of Lolium perenne grow runners (pseudo-stolons) above the surface of the soil, and these close gaps in the turf more effectively. For sports turf, they are the ideal addition to common meadow grass (Poa pratensis) rootstock.

"Cross sowing" area demonstrates suitable mixtures

A "cross-sowing" area has been created to demonstrate and evaluate the suitability of various turf combinations. Two species are being tested with a range of different varieties. The individual varieties of the Poa pratensis species are sown in strips that cross strips of varieties of Lolium perenne and Festuca arundinacea. In other words, the area consists of multiple plots with different mixtures. This will allow industry visitors to assess quality criteria such as competition, colour and turf density.

Grass and herb mixtures

The first areas were sown with "regional seed" back in 2013, so that professional visitors to the Special Turf Show in Eisenach can also find out about "wild" turf and grass areas.

Turf "demos"

Under the title "Diverse turf use demands sustainable maintenance concepts" ("Vielfältige Rasennutzung erfordert nachhaltige Pflegekonzepte"), a range of current issues will be covered during the trade show, which can be viewed on the demopark website so that visitors can come prepared. They can find out more with selected "demos" on the relevant days. The Deutsche Rasengesellschaft will be presenting the latest trends and issues with a poster presentation in the "Rasenkompetenzzelt" turf competence tent and in demonstrations on the turf.

Stabilising and reinforcing foundation layers

The issue of reinforcing football pitches to increase the intensity of use is becoming increasingly important, and not just in German Bundesliga stadiums. Newer procedures are now also being tested and implemented in high-use sport complexes with multiple pitches and courts. The following definitions are used:

  • "Hybrid foundation" = reinforced mixed foundation;

  • "Hybrid turf" = reinforced turf foundation with additional turf reinforcement.

The Special Turf Show will have selected exhibits from reinforced grass pitch and court systems in cases and illustrative samples.

The largest open-air exhibition in the industry in Europe

As the largest European open-air exhibition for the professional use of machines in green area maintenance, garden and landscape construction and communities, demopark + demogolf offers the unique opportunity of experiencing machines and devices in practice. The trade fair is organised by Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Machinenbaus mbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of VDMA. You can find more information at www.demopark.de.
