Digital Strategy presented by the Commission

Since her initial announcements, President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the ‘need for Europe to lead the transition to a healthy planet and a new digital world’.

In line with these priorities, on 19th February the European Commission published the ‘Digital Package’ which includes the following texts:

1. A Communication “Shaping Europe's digital future” which sets out the European Commission strategy on how to achieve the objective of maximising digitalisation benefits while preserving European values.

2. A Communication “A European strategy for data” to increase access to and use of data.

3. A White Paper on “Artificial Intelligence - A European approach to excellence and trust” accompanied by a Report on the safety and liability implications of Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things and robotics.

Among other actions, a European cybersecurity strategy (including the establishment of a joint Cybersecurity Unit) , a European Data Strategy and a new and revised rules to deepen the Internal Market for Digital Services are foreseen.

The White Paper on Artificial Intelligence is now open for public consultation until 19th May 2020.
