First Wacker Neuson EW100 mobile excavator in the UK

The first Wacker Neuson EW100 mobile excavator to go into service in the UK has joined the fleet of Glasgow-based Malcolm Construction. The order for the 10-tonne excavator was concluded by dealer Hamilton Bros. following a challenging six-week assessment by the customer. The specification includes a triple boom, all-wheel steer, rear stabiliser legs and a Powertilt coupler.

The excavator immediately went out on long-term hire to contractor BAM Nuttall to work on the Borders Rail project. Stretching for 30 miles it is the longest domestic railway constructed in Britain for more than a century. Darren Gilmour, Malcolm Construction’s Plant Director said: “We’d already heard good things about Wacker Neuson equipment and how it was gathering momentum in the UK. We did a bit of research and it looked like this machine could be what we were looking for. We liked its power, stability and versatility. On roadworks, for example, it’ll easily get into spaces a 14-tonner won’t. This machine has been sought after for some time by BAM Nuttall and they have a number of applications where they think it will be perfect.”

Hamilton Bros. has been a Wacker Neuson dealer since 2001 and John Young, construction area sales manager, commented: “Exposure doesn’t get any bigger than this. To achieve the first sale in the UK for the EW100 is a landmark for us and to sell it to a company of the stature of Malcolm Construction says a lot about the quality of the Wacker Neuson products.”

Richard Harrison, Managing Director of Wacker Neuson Ltd, commented: “We are delighted that Malcolm Construction have selected the EW100 mobile excavator to join its fleet. It is a company that has a reputation for evaluating product carefully and having our machines in its fleet can do nothing but enhance our reputation for producing quality products which perform and are reliable.”

Malcolm Construction is a division of the Malcolm Group, which has interests ranging from civil engineering and plant hire to road and rail logistics, aggregates and waste management. Donald Malcolm inherited the family business in the 1940s when he was just 14 and took on its assets of one truck and a horse and cart. By 1960 when the business was acquired by Grampian Holdings he had developed it to a fleet of 37 vehicles and seven items of plant. In 2002, Grampian Holdings plc was renamed The Malcolm Group plc and was fully listed on the UK Stock Exchange and in May 2005 after 45 years in the public domain the group was again taken into private ownership by the Malcolm family.

The company was the official construction provider for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and was responsible for transforming Hampden, the national football stadium, into the world-class track and field venue for the Games.
