Food donations from ag youth benefit Illinois pantries

America’s Farmers Food Drive collects 22,000 pounds of food at Farm Progress Show.

DECATUR, ILL. (09/27/2013) - Nearly 75 percent of food pantries have reported an increase in demand for their services in recent years, according to Feeding America. To help feed the nearly two million hungry people in Illinois, Monsanto, in conjunction with Farm Progress and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, sponsored the fifth annual America’s Farmers Food Drive at the Farm Progress Show Aug. 27-29 in Decatur, Ill.

The food drive collected more than 22,000 pounds of food for food pantries in the Decatur area, including Catholic Charities, Northeast Community Fund and the Salvation Army.

145 FFA chapters and 4-H clubs in Illinois participated in the America’s Farmers Food Drive. The top FFA chapters and top 4-H clubs that brought the most food, in pounds, were awarded $250 each. The ag youth organizations to receive a donation are:
•Pontiac FFA
•Maroa-Forsyth FFA
•Serena FFA
•4-H RoboStorms
•Camargo Champs 4-H Club

“It is Monsanto’s goal through the America’s Farmers Food Drive to raise awareness and help eliminate rural hunger,” said Elizabeth Vancil, Monsanto customer advocacy outreach manager. “The FFA and 4-H members who participated in the food drive should be proud to know that their donations are helping people in need who live in their communities.”

In addition to the food collected at the America’s Farmers Food Drive at Farm Progress Show, Monsanto donated $10,000 to the United Way of Decatur and Mid Illinois, and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation donated $10,000 to Feeding America.

“The monetary match from Monsanto will help pantries purchase food from the Central Illinois Foodbank, where the cost for many items is only 15 cents per pound,” said James Keith, United Way of Decatur and Mid Illinois director of community impact. “At that price, $10,000 equals 66,667 pounds of food.”

Monsanto launched the America’s Farmers Food Drive in 2009 at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Ill., which has resulted in more than 87,000 pounds of food collected to date.
