FUTTEC offers a patented microwave patcher enabling durable pothole repairs at temperatures as low as -10°C, addressing winter road maintenance challenges.
-
The technology heats both the asphalt mixture and damaged road area on-site using microwave systems, ensuring a strong, seamless bond.
-
Repairs can be performed year-round, reducing reliance on asphalt plants typically closed in winter and minimizing traffic disruption.

The method improves sustainability by reducing waste, lowering CO2 emissions, and extending asphalt surface lifetimes to reduce overall costs.
Winter conditions across Europe continue to put road infrastructure under pressure. Freezing temperatures, snow and ice accelerate the formation of cracks and potholes, creating safety risks for drivers and increasing repair costs for road authorities. At the same time, traditional asphalt plants are often shut down during winter, limiting the availability of standard hot-mix repair materials.
Czech technology company FUTTEC is offering a solution designed specifically for year-round maintenance: its patented FT-3 microwave patcher, which enables permanent pothole repairs even in sub-zero conditions. In February, with the support of Dutch equpment distributor InterTechno, FUTTEC demonstrated the technology on Dutch roads in the city of Zwolle, showcasing its ability to perform high-quality asphalt repairs at temperatures as low as -10°C.
“FUTTEC microwave technology can be used throughout the year, regardless of the season or climatic conditions,” said Jiří Rušikvas, founder of FUTTEC. “Even during winter, we can repair potholes effectively while keeping traffic moving, with minimal disruption for drivers. The goal is to deliver a long-lasting repair that restores the road surface and helps prevent recurring damage.”

How FUTTEC microwave pothole repair works
Unlike conventional winter repair methods, which often rely on temporary cold mixes or costly alternatives, FUTTEC’s technology is designed to create a strong and durable bond with the existing asphalt surface.
Maintenance crews operate with a fully equipped truck that carries the required tools and a pre-bagged asphalt mixture supplied through FUTTEC’s logistics system. The asphalt mixture is heated on site in a dedicated microwave furnace FF-9. At the same time, the damaged area of the road is gently heated using the FT-3 microwave patcher.
Once the pothole is cleaned and prepared, the heated asphalt mixture is applied and compacted. The microwave heating process ensures the repaired area bonds seamlessly with the surrounding pavement, reducing the risk of weak joints or premature failure.
