To adapt to today’s widespread need to enable people to work at height safely with increasingly heavy loads using a single machine, Genie continues to expands it Xtra Capacity™ (XC™) boom lift product family. Designed to work in more applications that require higher capacities, with the “XC” designation in their nomenclature, these machines are easy to spot in rental yards and jobsites. Marking a European premier, with its Genie® SX-135 XC™ and new Genie S™-85 XC telescopic booms lifts at APEX 2017, the Xtra Capacity Genie Z™-45/25 XC articulating boom will also be on display at this year’s show.

Genie SX-135 XC boom lift

Defined by customers as the most significant breakthrough in stick booms that the industry has seen in well over a decade, the Genie SX-135 XC self-propelled telescopic boom lift delivers an industry leading outreach of 27 m (90 ft) and a dual capacity of 300 kg/ 454 kg (660 lb/1,000 lb) throughout its full working envelope. Combining a working height of 43.15 m (141 ft) with 3 m (10 ft) more outreach and 32% more capacity throughout the full working envelope than similar units in its category, the SX-135 XC also features a Jib Extend™ that telescopes from 5.48 m (18 ft) to 9.14 m (30 ft) and a compact footprint of 3.94 m (12 ft 11 in) x 4.11 m (13 ft 6 in). It also provides the ability to work 6 m (19 ft 8 in) below grade.

“The SX-135 XC is an excellent start to finish solution from the foundations upwards that provides excellent jobsite manoeuvrability as well as the space required for traffic to circulate,” says Adam Hailey, Director Product Management, Terex AWP. The Genie SX-135 XC boom lift will position workers and gear exactly where they are needed in 2½ minutes and is drive enabled at full height. Hailey continues, “By reducing the number of trips from ground to working height to load tools and materials with precise weight control, customers will find that they have a lot to gain with this new Genie Xtra Capacity model in terms of efficiency, productivity and working comfort as a whole.”

Genie S-85 XC telescopic boom lift

The latest addition to the Genie Xtra Capacity family, the Genie S-85 XC boom updates the brand’s popular earlier telescopic units to enhance rates of utilisation by providing the ability to perform a wider range of heavier lift tasks on construction and industrial jobsites.

Just like all models of the Xtra Capacity family, the S-85 XC boom now features automatic envelope control that retracts automatically as the boom reaches its maximum operating envelope, allowing for simple platform positioning and an enhanced operator experience even when working on sloping ground. It is also equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and limits the operating envelope to match the load chart, while boasting the ability to perform zero-load field calibrations. To support additional weight in the platform to handle the 454 kg (1,000 lb) maximum capacity easily, the new XC booms are engineered with a redesigned boom structure that boasts increased performance, range of motion and envelope control, as well as a robust reinforced jib design.

The new Genie S-85 XC boom boasts 27.91 m (91 ft) working height with 22.71 m (74 ft 6 in) of outreach and is equipped with a 55 kW (74 hp) Stage IIIB/Tier 4F diesel engine. It also includes a 1.83 m (6 ft) dual entry or a 2.44 m (8 ft) tri-entry platform with side-swing gate and a 1.52 m (5 ft) jib. While the S-85 XC boom continues to share commonality in design, parts and accessories with the other Genie products in customers’ rental fleets, it also boasts its own its own productivity-boosting features such as: the virtual pivot primary boom that aligns the machine’s centre of gravity for machine weight efficiency —17,781 kg (39,200 lb); fixed-width axles for faster setup; active oscillating axles for enhanced traction on rough terrain, and 360˚ continuous turntable rotation for quick positioning.

Finally, the new S-85 XC telescopic boom has been updated with a new state-of-the-art CAN-based ALC600 control system (replacing the earlier ALC500). Altogether smarter, both technicians and operators will find the new ALC600 much simpler and more straightforward to use. Marking a significant improvement in terms of diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities, settings and parameters can now be modified directly on the machine without the need for any additional tools. Overall connectivity with customer telematics systems is also enhanced. New and improved features include a clear display of gauges on the display controller, new full error code readouts with text, as well as a service mode providing clear menus for settings and parameters. For added flexibility, with the new ALC600, software updates can now be performed directly from the control panel via USB, without the need for a laptop computer. Technicians also benefit from password-protected fault logs that display the last 100 faults for both the engine and the machine.

Genie Z-45/25 XC articulating boom lift

Responding to new industry trends and the need to reload less often to help save time and work more productively, thanks to its Xtra Capacity specifications, the Genie Z-45/25 XC boom is now well suited to a broader range of applications on unfinished construction sites to provide operators the ability to perform a wider variety of heavier lift and access tasks using a single machine.

Offering a maximum working height of 15.9 m (51 ft 6 in), a maximum horizontal outreach of 7.55 m (24 ft 9 in), and an up-and-over clearance of 7.3 m (23 ft 11 in), this Xtra Capacity articulating unit combines the benefits of a dual-envelope design providing an unrestricted load capacity of 300 kg (660 lb) and a restricted capacity of 454 kg (1000 lb). When operated with the primary boom in retracted position, this machine’s maximum horizontal outreach is reduced by no more than 1.7 m (5ft 6 in) compared with the standard unit.

“To adapt to its increased lift capacity and performance and to reduce calibration time for overall productivity, the new Z-45/25 XC boom includes a larger reinforced rotator support, a wider jib and redesigned cylinders and boasts a new improved load sense system. It even comes as standard with a newly designed 1.83 m (6 ft) dual-entry platform featuring a side-entry swing gate and a front sliding mid-rail to provide quick and easy entry for three operators wearing a tool belt, carrying tools and loading jobsite materials,” says Christine Zeznick, Product Manager, Terex AWP EMEAR.

Offering the cost-effective parts commonality and serviceability benefits shared by all Genie products, the new Z-45/25 XC boom comes equipped with a standard Deutz 35.8 kW (48 hp). It can be driven at full height under maximum load, and features the brand’s unique full-time, positive drive traction and active oscillating axle system.

Other key features of the Xtra Capacity Z-45/25 XC include a tight turning radius and zero tail swing to provide the maneuverability required to work efficiently in confined areas, complete with powered swing chassis rotation, a self-leveling platform with 160° hydraulic platform rotation and standard foam filled rough terrain tyres.
