Just 3 Weeks until Talent in Logistics 2018

Managers, trainers and instructors from transport, warehousing and logistics businesses are set to flock to the Talent in Logistics Conference and Awards on 21st June 2018. The event provides opportunities for continued professional development, and well as business networking and the chance to celebrate the best people in the industry. With the prestigious event just a few weeks away, tickets are now extremely limited.

A packed conference agenda will see a range of relevant and thought-provoking topics addressed to ensure learning and development professionals can learn new knowledge and skills. Sessions just added include the seminar “Mental Health First Aid in Industrial Environments” with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England and a discussion on “Utilising military leadership techniques to create high performing teams in logistics” led by Chris Gibson, MBE, of The Leadership Team.

A key focus of the forward-looking conference is the future of the industry, with sessions titled: “Why aren’t young people attracted to working in logistics?”, “The Apprenticeship Levy – making it work for your business” and “What training will be needed for an automated future?”.

Delegates can also learn “The DVSA’s thoughts on the future of vocational training” from Mark Winn, who will shortly become Chief Driving Examiner at DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). As one of his first speaking engagements in his new position, this will be a chance to hear how he plans to put his stamp on the role at DVSA and what he hopes to achieve. Other useful topics to support the acquisition and retention of future talent include “How to attract diverse talent to your business” and “Understanding and overcoming resistance to learning”.

A Health and Safety focus will come from “Workplace transport compliance and investigations: A legal view”, “Forklifts, warehousing and racking: the true story of a 9-hour rescue” and “Forklift training myths – are you wasting money?”, which will also address important topics around legal compliance.

There will also be a choice of two workshops running over lunchtime to ensure delegates get the most out of attending. One session aimed at training providers offers practical advice on GDPR, while another will teach attendees new leadership skills to aid their business. With such a focused and relevant agenda, attending CILT UK Members will be awarded three hours CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

Learn from top professionals

Expert speakers and panellists will share their knowledge, and offer informed opinions through presentations, debates and panel discussions to help all attendees develop their skills and their businesses. Speakers include David Lynch, Managing Director, Bis Henderson Academy, who will advise businesses how to make the most of the Apprenticeship Levy and training and HR consultant Melanie Luteijn of Go Further Goals whose presentation will tech businesses how to understand and overcome resistance to learning.

Share views and experiences with peers

The conference not only offers learning-based seminars, but also provides a platform for participating in topical debates on key issues facing the industry. For instance, a panel of specialists will lead a lively debate in a session titled “What will Brexit mean for training regulation in warehousing, transport and logistics?”, exploring questions around training qualifications and legislation post-Brexit.

For managers wondering how to attract the next generation of talent, a debate titled “Why aren’t young people attracted to working in logistics?” will feature apprentices from Gregory Distribution Ltd. on the panel, explaining why they chose a career in logistics. Delegates can question the panel and learn what their businesses need to do to attract the right candidates for their skills pipeline.

See best practice in action

Live demonstrations will take place to help managers appreciate the importance of pre-use and walk round vehicle checks and what best practice looks like. There will be two chances to see each session, both of which are designed to improve safety by helping employers to understand the key things that they, and their operators or drivers, should be aware of.

RTITB Auditor and Examiner Gavin Hutchinson will show the correct way to carry out a pre-use forklift truck inspection and explain what to do if a fault is found. A live demonstration of a walk round check of a tractor unit and trailer will be delivered by Richard Brewer, Manager of the National Register of LGV Instructors (NRI).

Support live competition finalists

The exciting Grand Finals of both the 2018 Forklift Operator of the Year (sponsored by UniCarriers UK Ltd) and the Forklift Instructor of the Year (sponsored by Hyster Europe) take place live during the Talent in Logistics Conference. After dinner, there will be entertainment from authentic Queen tribute band ‘Flash’, previously featured on BBC TV.
