Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a ship-to-shore (STS) crane refurbishment project by the Belawan International Container Terminal (BICT) in Medan, Indonesia. The contract was signed in December 2013, and the project is expected to be completed in August 2014.
BICT is managed by Pelindo I, one of four state owned Indonesian terminal operators. The terminal, located on the island of Java, serves the Straits of Malacca, the busiest shipping lane in the world.
The project involves the refurbishment of a Nelcon STS crane, with scope of work including the replacement of the electrical control system (PLC and DC drives), main dynamic brakes, wire ropes, spreader pulley sheaves and headblock. The scope also includes repair works for the DC motors and festoon system.
Akhmad Hidayah Alcaff, General Manager, BICT commented: "BICT being one of the busiest container terminals in the region, we need to make sure that our performance remains high in all situations. The refurbishment works will improve the overall reliability and performance of the crane for the foreseeable future. Kalmar with their local dealer, PT Indotruck Utama were evaluated and awarded the project because of their proven track record and strong local presence."
Collin Swee, Director, Kalmar Crane Upgrades Business Centre in APAC said: "We are very excited to work with BICT on this project which will help them leverage their assets and keep downtime at the minimum.
"STS crane refurbishment is a very attractive choice when seeking improved crane performance and capacity, at minimum cost," he continues. "Kalmar currently has six teams undertaking crane upgrade projects in the APAC region in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. Each project team is led by an experienced project manager, and consists of multi-discipline technical specialists in the fields of structural and mechanical design and automation systems."
Kalmar's strategic intent is to become a leading global crane upgrade and refurbishment services provider, and it is serving customers through Crane Upgrades Business Centres in South America, North America, EMEA and APAC. In 2013, it completed several projects for customers worldwide.
