Mammoet wins 2 ESTA Awards for SPMT and Safety Projects

Every year the European Association of abnormal road transport and mobile cranes (ESTA) organizes a competition to honor outstanding projects for special, complicated, innovative or otherwise interesting jobs or solutions. At their annual ESTA Awards of Excellence competition, which was held this year on 23 April in Paris, France, Mammoet received 2 Awards in the categories SPMT (Botlekbrug Installation) and Safety (COGAS auxiliary hoist).

SPMT Project

In the category SPMT, Mammoet won the award for the load-out and transportation of the new Botlekbrug in the Port of Rotterdam area, The Netherlands. The decks for this new bridge were assembled at the Mammoet Heavy Lift terminal at Schiedam and Mammoet was responsible for the load-out and transportation to the new bridge location.

Width and height restrictions along the water route presented the biggest challenge, for which Mammoet devised a special solution. Two small barges that fit the all the passages exactly were linked together by a structure that consisted partly of SPMTs. The hydraulic suspension systems of the SPMTs were used to keep the load level and stable at all times, and essential for the accurate positioning of the extremely heavy load. The project provides an example of the use of SPMTs for the installation of large structures.

Safety Project

Mammoet was also presented with an award for its safety innovation called the COGAS Auxiliary Hoist, a system that constantly adjusts the position of the hook to the center of gravity during a lift. The auxiliary hoist gives a single crane operator full control of the lifting operation and enhances safety. It enables precise adjustment of the length of the wire and as well as the distance between the hook and the load. The hook is thus kept exactly above the center of gravity at all times. This eliminates the need for an auxiliary crane during certain operations.

Sander Splinter, Managing Director Mammoet Europe, commented “We are very proud to receive this award for safety innovation, which underlines Mammoet’s dedication to continuous improvement and safe delivery of our projects.”
