  • Haulotte unveils Obstacle Detection Assist (ODA), a new factory-installed safety option for aerial work platforms at MRO 2026, aimed at aviation maintenance professionals.

  • ODA uses multiple sensors and alerts to help operators detect obstacles around the upper structure, improving safety near high-value aircraft components.

  • The system is available exclusively on the STAR 10, SIGMA 16 PRO, and HA20 E PRO models and was developed with input from aviation experts and tested in real conditions.

  • ODA exemplifies Haulotte's Drive Confidence commitment by providing a seamlessly integrated OEM solution that enhances operator control and reduces costly ground damage.

At MRO 2026, the leading event for aviation maintenance professionals, Haulotte is introducing Obstacle Detection Assist (ODA), a new factory-installed option available on three aerial work platform models.

Developed in collaboration with aviation maintenance specialists and tested for several months in real operating conditions, ODA helps operators work confidently around high-value assets. OEM-certified, the solution is natively integrated into the machine and fully aligned with the Group's Drive Confidence commitment.

Aviation maintenance: an environment where every contact matters

Fuselages, wings, engines and tail assemblies: maintenance teams work every day on aircraft worth tens or even hundreds of millions of euros, often in confined environments. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ground damage costs the aviation industry around USD 5 billion every year, a figure that could approach USD 10 billion by 2035 without additional preventive measures. Beyond repair costs, aircraft downtime can significantly affect maintenance schedules and fleet availability.

Even for experienced operators, visibility around a boom lift remains limited, especially beneath the platform during delicate approach manoeuvres. ODA was developed to address this challenge and support maintenance operations regardless of the work area around the asset being serviced.

ODA: an operator assistance system for the upper structure of the machine

Using several sensors positioned on the upper part of the machine, ODA provides operators with information about the proximity of obstacles. The system supports operators throughout maintenance operations, regardless of their working position around the asset, helping facilitate manoeuvres in situations where certain parts of the machine may be difficult to perceive from the platform controls.

Depending on the model, the system combines ultrasonic sensors, a laser sensor, a dedicated human-machine interface (HMI), an open-gate sensor, audible and visual alerts, and automatic stopping of movements that could lead to a collision. Designed to meet the requirements of environments such as aviation maintenance, museums and specific industrial applications, ODA helps operators better understand their surroundings. The option is available exclusively as a factory-installed feature on the STAR 10, SIGMA 16 PRO and HA20 E PRO models.

A solution proven in real-world conditions

The project originated from discussions with key aviation stakeholders, including a major European rental company and a leading aircraft maintenance organization. ODA was then tested for several months in actual maintenance environments, with continuous feedback from operators. These field trials enabled Haulotte to fine-tune the system, particularly the stopping distances.

"In aviation, every maintenance operation requires precision, control and anticipation. With ODA, our ambition is to provide operators with a better understanding of their working environment when operating close to sensitive equipment. Developed by Haulotte and integrated into the machine from the design stage, ODA delivers all the benefits of a true OEM solution. Designed according to the specific kinematics of each model, it integrates seamlessly with the platform's systems and overall operation. This native integration ensures a consistent user experience, optimized performance and full machine certification. ODA illustrates our commitment to developing practical innovations directly inspired by real-world challenges and the needs expressed by our customers." - Laurent MUGUET - Chef de produit Marketing.
