Putzmeister America, Inc. introduced its new 38Z-Meter Truck-Mounted Concrete Boom Pump at the World of Concrete trade show in January 2014. The innovative pump features a completely brand new design for its five-section boom arm and pedestal for increased maneuverability, a reduced boom unfolding height, reduced overall weight, and a more user-friendly design.
While the previous 38Z featured a four-section boom arm, the new model has five sections, allowing for increased maneuverability and a reduced unfolding height—down from 29 feet (8.7 m) to 24 feet (7.4 m), which gives it the ability to open up in more confined spaces. The reach of the boom arm is approximately 108 feet (32.8 m) horizontal, 123 feet (37.5 m) vertical.
“The use of a five section boom design is a significant advantage for our customers in terms of the flexibility needed on tight jobsites,” said Jim Bury, director of engineering for Putzmeister America.“In addition to that new feature, the updated 38Z embraces many of the same improvements we’ve made to the other boom pumps in our next generation.”
With a gross vehicle weight under 53,000 lbs (25.5 tons) , the new pump weighs 1,500 lbs. (0.8tons) less than the previous 38Z model, allowing for an increased payload capacity for job site equipment, water and fuel. After the simple addition of a single pusher axle, the new standard 38Z can be configured to meet the Federal Bridge Law requirements.
Along with the increased size of the boom on the 38Z, comes a more robust pedestal to support it. The updated pedestal’s sub-frame features bolted connections, allowing for greater flexibility. By adjusting to torsion from the force of the pump, the life of the pump is increased, while the chance for downtime is reduced. Additionally, the pedestal now has a rotation bearing instead of a rack and pinion, which has helped with the machine’s overall we ight reduction and allows for easier access to the turret pipe.
The 38Z’s new hydraulic system has an improved filtration system, uses less oil, and has fewer parts than the previous system. It also produces cleaner oil, which improves pump functioning and reduces maintenance intervals.
Another significant change in the design of the new 38 Z pump is an improved pipe layout and an increased parts commonality between components of the pipe system. In the resulting design, only three types of elbows are used, as compared with seven elbows in the previous model.
“The pipe hangers are bolted on to the boom for much easier and less costly servicing, and are connected to the arms in the engineered locations that are the least stressed when operating,” said Bury.
The pump’s new Ergonic® Graphic Display, which features wireless computer technology and a high resolution, color screen, also contributes to the pump’s enhanced usability. This main control system allows the operator to set parameters that control the boom, pump, and a variety of other functions, ultimately increasing the convenience, performance and overall ease-of-use of the machine.
The 38Z will features the new RS 909 Hopper, which offers a more robust, yet lightweight, design and promises an increased service life. Both the mounting and hopper shell and the multi-piece grate have been improved. Additionally, for added safety, the RS 909 hopper incorporates an RFID safety switch, preventing it from operating with the grate open and incorporating zero moving parts, while using the same advanced sensor technology shown to be effective and reliable in other Putzmeister systems.
As with every Putzmeister concrete boom pump, the new 38Z meets all ASME B30.27-2009 Safety standards and was produced in Putzmeister’s ISO 9001:2008 quality certified Sturtevant, Wis.facility. The 38Z-Meter Truck-Mounted Concrete Boom Pump is available for immediate order.
