Caterpillar has developed a full line of EU Stage V industrial engines that deliver the high performance and low cost of ownership customers expect from its product offering.
With the most comprehensive range in the industry, from the 2-cylinder 0.5 liter to the 16-cylinder 78 liter, delivering 8–2100 hp (6–1566 kW), the Cat® Stage V engine offering is built around customers’ needs for maximum productivity and is fully supported by the Cat dealer network.
“With more than a billion hours’ of real-world, off-highway experience with diesel particulate filter (DPF) technologies at Stage IV, we’re extremely confident in the reliability and durability of our new Stage V engines. Furthermore, customers will see up to 20 percent increases in power density across our Stage V lineup, maximizing productivity and reducing cost of ownership,” said Steve Ferguson, Vice President Industrial Power Systems.
“In a competitive industry, where machine manufacturers are eager to increase profitability, we have focused on delivering value by increasing performance and driving down installation and operating costs,” Ferguson added.

The Stage V lineup in Hall A4 at bauma Munich includes the powerful C2.2 which delivers 74 hp (55 kW) and the new C3.6 platform, a modular 4-cylinder offering at 134 hp (100 kW) which is designed to deliver quiet power in a compact, flexible package that reduces installation complexity.
The new Cat C4.4 engine is ideal for equipment manufacturers who are looking to downsize and with Caterpillar’s industry-leading engine mounted aftertreatment, it allows machine manufacturers to remove significant cost and complexity from their installation. The 4-cylinder, 4.4-liter engine is available in multiple power ratings from 110 hp (82 kW) to 200 hp (150 kW) with peak torque reaching 825 Nm (609 lb-ft).
Continued technology advancements mean the new engine offers significant machine productivity benefits with 15 percent increase in power, 10 percent more torque and 5-10 percent reduction in fuel consumption. The C4.4 includes aftertreatment upgrades to ensure transparent regeneration so machine performance is not impacted, delivering a service free system and maximum uptime.
The versatility of the Cat engine range is demonstrated by the next generation C13B which is making its bauma Munich debut and is shown as an industrial power unit (IPU) – a plug-and-play solution that minimizes machine design, validation and installation costs. Building on a proven, reliable 12.5 liter core with over 123 million off-highway field hours, the engine is available in multiple power ratings from 456 hp (340 kW) to 577 hp (430 kW) with peak torque reaching 2634 Nm (1943 lb.ft). The C13B delivers 20 percent more power, 19 percent more torque and the aftertreatment is 65 percent smaller than Stage IV, enabling machine manufacturers to downsize their engine platforms, lower installation costs and maximize uptime.
In the newly regulated power category above 750 hp (560 kW), the C18, C27 and C32 offer power ratings from 755–1125 hp (563–839 kW) and meet Stage V emissions with only a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment. The C18 on display will feature engine mounted aftertreatment and is dual certified to Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final without the need for a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system, streamlining equipment design installation.
Platform upgrades to increase power density have also been made to the C7.1 and C9.3B on display in Hall B6. First introduced at bauma Munich 2016, the C9.3B is now certified to Stage V and has been in production for over a year, offering 19 percent more power and 21 percent more torque while reducing system weight by 12 percent.
“We’re confident in both the capability and reliability of our new platforms. Machine manufacturers who are looking to downsize and increase machines sales can be reassured of durability throughout the life of their machine,” says Ferguson.
Value beyond the engine
Caterpillar’s digital solutions are transforming data into insights that are helping customers make better, more informed decisions about their operations. This insight is translating into reduced downtime for customers, optimized performance and better lifecycle utilization.
A range of engine-focused digital solutions are enabling customers to work more efficiently and more profitably to stay ahead of critical service needs, easily navigate the status of an entire fleet and most importantly keep downtime off the table.
“The deep knowledge we have of Cat engines is what allows us to provide a superior level of service to customers using our Caterpillar telematics and digital solutions,” said Phillida Irving, Global Customer Strategy Manager. “Our digital team provides the technical expertise, and the Cat dealer network works with our customers on a day-to-day basis, providing the tools, the parts and the service expertise.”
Cat dealer support
Product support to keep the Stage V engine range operating at maximum efficiency is provided by the world-class global Cat dealer network. Cat dealers offer genuine Cat parts and a variety of services including scheduled maintenance and extended service coverage (ESC) to optimize engine life and lower operating costs. In addition, dealer service technicians are trained to service the entire Cat industrial diesel engine range.
