STRABAG building in Uganda: road upgrade for € 54 million

  • Widening and asphalting of a 66 km road in northern Uganda

  • Project co-financed by the European Development Fund

STRABAG International, a subsidiary of publicly listed European construction group STRABAG, has been awarded the contract to upgrade a 66 km road in Uganda. The contract foresees widening and paving the existing gravel road between the towns of Atiak and Laropi. Construction is expected to start in March and to last for 30 months. The value of the contract is approx. € 54 million, with the project being co-financed by the European Development Fund.

“The road is situated in the remote north of Uganda. That actually makes it an important part of the transportation link to the capital of Kampala in the south but also to the north with the White Nile at Laropi, where we are also building a ferry dock,” explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

Roads and dams

Since the 1970s, STRABAG has handled road construction projects in this region of Africa, including the road from Kigali to Gatuna in Rwanda or the Bus Rapid Transit project in Tanzania, and is also active in dam construction.
