Machine manufacturers and construction companies around the globe are searching for ways to achieve the ultimate goal of climate-neutral construction. The challenge here is to continuously reduce emissions of CO2 and other harmful gases over the coming decades until they reach zero. The focus is, however, not on individual machines, but on the entire process leading up to the finished product – a road.
Ultimately, the deciding factor is the emissions generated per mile of newly built or rehabilitated road – the CO2e per unit of work done. Here, the Wirtgen Group has set concrete goals. By 2026, they will further increase the availability of hybrid and completely electric machines and will offer machines and plants that can be operated with non-fossil or climate-neutral fuels.
Machine digitalization will make a significant contribution to the optimization of processes and, in turn, lead to further reductions of harmful emissions. The Wirtgen Group hopes to thereby reduce emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by more than 50% by 2023, and in scope 3 by at least 30%.
