Fliegl Trailer has continued the series of tests with its Twin curtainside trailers. Following a comparison test drive with standard trailers in the summer, the next step was to put two mega trailers through their paces – a three-axle trailer and a Twin 200 with two axles and 2 x 10 ton axle load. Both vehicles had the same load and were pulled by identical new IVECO trucks with 460 hp and calibrated consumption meters. Before the comparison, the trucks were fuelled under the supervision of DEKRA. The 400 km route consisted of motorways as well as approx. 40 km of B-roads: Triptis (A9) – Hermsdorf intersection – Weimar (A4) – Bad Berka (B85) – Stadtilm (B87) – A71 (Rennsteig motorway) to Suhl – Coburg – Bamberg (A73) – Bayreuth/Kulmbach triangle (A70/A9) – Triptis. "We consciously completed around 10% of the journey on country roads", explains test manager Michael Abendroth. "This represents a realistic proportion in everyday logistics. We also wanted to test the manoeuvrability of the twin-axle trailer in corners, roundabouts and built-up areas".
The standard Twin delivered a convincing performance in the summer by consuming 2.4 litres less diesel over 100 km. But the MegaRunner Twin beat this value quite convincingly: It consumed 2.8 litres less than the three-axle trailer, to the great surprise of the test team and two participating journalists. Based on an annual distance of 150,000 km and a diesel price of €1.10 per litre, this results in potential savings of €4620 per year. The savings are increased by a 1.8cent reduction in toll charges per kilometre and the lower tyre and brake wear. Michael
