The Which? Best Buy endorsement is given to products with high total test scores that perform consistently well in rigorous tests and excel in all key areas. For a lawnmower, the test focuses on how well it cuts the grass and on its ease of use.

The R40 is the entry level model in John Deere’s range of 24 different walk-behind lawnmowers. Compact, lightweight and robust, it is suitable for mowing areas up to 700m2, making it the perfect solution for smaller gardens.

The 40cm (15in) polypropylene deck is strong but also light in weight for easy handling, and comes with a 10 year consumer warranty. Adjusting the height of cut is very simple, using a single lever which allows the operator to choose six positions between 25 and 75mm (1 and 3in).

In addition, the handlebar is easily adjustable to ensure maximum comfort for the operator according to their height and individual preference.

The Which? Report describes the John Deere R40 as “…a great little petrol mower and a worthy Best Buy, as it gives a very neat finish and is easy to handle. It gives a great cut on grass, whether it’s long, damp or just a normal family lawn.” The report summarises the R40 as “No frills but very effective” and adds “Cuts and collects very well, light and manoeuvrable.”

The R40 is the second John Deere walk-behind mower to achieve the Which? Best Buy status, following the RUN 46 walk-behind mower that received the endorsement in January 2015 with a score of 82 per cent, the highest of all the Best Buy lawnmowers.
