Atlas Copco SCA, part of the Industrial Technique business area, recently opened its first U.S. innovation center, bringing the number of such facilities up to seven worldwide. At the innovation centers, customers from the automotive and general industries get the opportunity to test adhesive solutions for their applications.

Adhesives are increasingly used for example by automotive manufacturers that want to use lighter materials such as aluminum instead of steel to make the vehicles more fuel efficient. Traditional welding can be difficult with the lighter materials, opening up for alternative assembly technologies. Another increasingly popular assembly method is self-pierce riveting. Atlas Copco became the market leader in self-pierce riveting with last year’s acquisition of Henrob.

“Our experienced teams work closely with the customers to develop the best solutions for individual application needs,” said Mats Rahmström, President of the Industrial Technique business area. “We are pleased to see that the innovation centers for different assembly technologies – tightening, riveting or adhesives – are a success.”

The customers’ participation at the centers give them a key role from a very early stage in shaping the solutions they need. The new U.S. site has already attracted plenty of customers, and more than a hundred visitors from major automotive manufacturers came at the recently held customer days.

Atlas Copco SCA’s deep understanding of the customer processes and challenges makes its competence unique in the market. The unit runs more than 200 customer tests worldwide every year.
