Looking Up takes you through the exciting journey of an EnCORE refurbishment with Manitowoc’s local dealer for Turkey, KARUN, which is giving the 17-year-old Grove all-terrain crane a fresh start.
At Manitowoc, we believe in the longevity and reliability of every crane we build. That’s why we’re excited to see KARUN, our EnCORE partner in Turkey, embark on a comprehensive overhaul of a 17-year-old Grove GMK4100 all-terrain crane for İÇDAŞ, a major player in Turkey's iron and steel industry.
The project, which kicked off in May 2024, is a testament to how Manitowoc cranes can stand the test of time with dedicated care and maintenance. But this isn’t just a routine EnCORE service—it's a complete transformation. KARUN is using 100% Manitowoc-certified spare parts to restore the GMK4100 to peak performance at its workshop, ensuring it’s ready for the heavy lifting ahead at İÇDAŞ’ facility.
This is just the initial phase of the project, but the groundwork being laid is crucial for the success of the entire overhaul. Over the next several months, KARUN will continue preparing the GMK4100 to meet the demands of İÇDAŞ’ industry-leading steel operations. Looking Up will walk you through the steps of the Manitowoc EnCORE refurbishment and share updates as the crane progresses.
“This GMK4100 has been a workhorse for over 17 years, delivering exceptional performance,” said Cihan Bektaş, after-sales manager at KARUN. “We’re thrilled to give it a new lease of life, ensuring many more years of reliable service and productivity.”
Currently, KARUN is tackling the crane’s critical components, with work that includes:
-
Electrical system revitalization: To bring the crane's electrical systems up to date, all the electric harness cables and critical components, like the angle box, cable drums, and the rope length indicator, are being replaced.
-
Hydraulics and pneumatics upgrade: Full replacement of hydraulic and pneumatic hoses, ensuring the finished crane delivers smooth and reliable operation.
-
Boom overhaul: The crane's boom has been completely disassembled—including the tele-cylinder and all five boom sections. The EnCORE team will then replace worn-out pads and check locking parts.
-
Slewing and superstructure renewal: A brand-new slewing bearing and a new superstructure cab are being installed, ensuring precision in movement and operator comfort.
-
Component inspections: All hydraulic and mechanical components are undergoing meticulous checks to guarantee accurate functionality.
-
Regular maintenance: KARUN is performing a 1,000-hour maintenance service, changing out filters, hydraulic oil, and other essential fluids to keep the GMK4100 running smoothly.
-
A fresh coat: The crane will be fully repainted, giving it a fresh look to match its restored performance.
“At Manitowoc, we take pride in seeing our cranes undergo EnCORE transformations like this one—where trusted partners like KARUN give new life to machines that have already proven themselves in the field,” said Andy Claybrook, Manitowoc’s global EnCORE director.
