In the latest Euro NCAP safety tests for regional distribution transport, Mercedes‑Benz Trucks has achieved a five‑star rating with an Actros 4x2 Rigid with box body. EURO NCAP stands for European New Car Assessment Programme and is an independent European vehicle safety rating program that evaluates vehicles based on standardized crash tests and the performance of safety and driver assistance systems. It assesses how effectively modern trucks, supported by driver assistance and safety systems, help prevent accidents or mitigate their consequences. The overall score of 88 percent combines all evaluated safety areas and confirms a high level of safety across all test categories.

“The results show that our safety and assistance systems, such as Active Sideguard Assist 2 and Active Brake Assist 6 Plus, effectively can support drivers in demanding traffic situations while at the same time protecting other road users—especially in complex traffic environments,” said Mustafa Üstertuna, Chief Engineer Software & Electrics/Electronics at Daimler Truck.

Tested vehicles and realistic test scenarios

Euro NCAP tested vehicles from the heavy‑duty truck segment that are used in urban distribution transport as well as in regional and long‑distance operations on rural roads and highways. The tests replicate typical accident scenarios, including rear‑end and frontal collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, unintentional lane departures, as well as turning and maneuvering at low speeds. The assessments are carried out under standardized conditions on the test track. Among other things, steering robots and specialized test equipment for driver assistance systems are used to ensure reproducible and comparable results.

Focus on protecting vulnerable road users

A particular focus of the Euro NCAP rating is the protection of so‑called vulnerable road users. In dedicated tests, the reliability with which pedestrians and cyclists are detected and how the vehicle reacts in critical situations is evaluated—for example when turning at intersections, pulling away or performing slow maneuvers in urban traffic. In these scenarios, Mercedes‑Benz Trucks achieves especially high ratings. Tests on collision avoidance at low speeds as well as on the detection of cyclists along the vehicle’s side and in the front area receive very positive evaluations.

High scores in key safety categories

Mercedes‑Benz Trucks achieves very good results in several safety‑relevant categories in the Euro NCAP test. These include assistance systems for speed and distance control, lane monitoring and lane‑departure prevention functions, as well as systems that automatically respond when an imminent collision is detected. Driver and occupant monitoring as well as the provision of rescue information for emergency responders are also included in the overall assessment. In an emergency, this information can help rescue operations to be initiated more quickly and in a more targeted manner.

The results of the tests in urban environments are summarized in the so‑called CitySafe Award. With this distinction, Euro NCAP highlights vehicles that make a particularly strong contribution to road safety in city traffic. Mercedes‑Benz Trucks is recognized in this category.

The Actros 6x2 Rigid truck variant as well as the Actros 4x2 Tractor Unit have also already achieved the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety assessment. In addition, all variants tested to date have been awarded the CitySafe Award.
