The 23-tonne HX230 was the first of Hyundai’s Next Generation crawler excavators to arrive in the North American market, following its debut at the ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas in March. The machine also joins a growing line-up in Europe, boasting efficient Hyundai engines, Full Electrohydraulic (FEH) controls and a new level of operator comfort.

The HX230 is powered by a four-cylinder, 5-litre, Stage V compliant diesel engine producing 141kW (189hp) and 955Nm of torque. Despite being one of the most powerful engines in the 23-tonne class, the machine consumes up to 7% less fuel and as much as 30% less AdBlue than the A-Series model it replaces. Service intervals are now set at 1,000 hours, twice that of the previous machine, further reducing maintenance costs for businesses.
The hydraulic system is managed by EPOS (Electric Power Optimising System), ensuring optimal flow rates for reduced fuel consumption. All Next Generation excavators have Full Electrohydraulic (FEH) control levers, reducing hydraulic loss and increasing response and accuracy.
The machines are available with a host of technologies, including 2D machine control and machine guidance systems, that can be upgraded to 3D if required. There is an Automatic Weighing Function available, providing faster, more accurate loading, while Lift Assist and Advanced Lift Assist options assist the operator to maintain stability with heavy loads. An E-Boundary option can be used to prevent collisions and boost onsite safety.
The HX230 has Hyundai’s Smart Around View Monitor (SAVM) system, an upgrade on the previous generation four-camera system that now boasts six cameras mounted on the upper structure of the machine. The SAVM system uses AI-based human detection. The machines can be fitted with Radar Object Detection to alert the operator to hazards and an auto stop function is available to halt the machine’s movements if required.
There is a new level of comfort and control in the Next Generation cab, where there are one or an optional two 12.8” high-definition touchscreen monitors. Seating, lighting and storage have all been improved and customers can specify a Comfort Pack, adding premium seating, multi-channel audio and luxury floor coverings. The cab comes with a four-corner beacon system, ensuring visibility on site from all angles.
The machine boasts a 4.9-tonne counterweight, 29% heavier than the previous model. This delivers additional stability and allows increased lifting capacity. A dipper arm breakout force of 116kN and a bucket breakout of 164kN positions the HX230 as one of the most powerful machines in the 22-tonne sector.
The HX230 is available with a 5.7m monoboom, a two-piece articulating boom or an 8.5m long reach boom, on the HX230LR. Dipper arm lengths are 2.4m, 2.9m and 3.5m on the monoboom, 2.4m and 2.9m with the two-piece boom and 6.2m for the LR This results in maximum digging depths of 7,220mm for the monoboom, 6,490mm for the two-piece and 11,665mm on the long-reach model. The machine will be offered with a choice of four track pad widths.
All Next Generation models feature Hyundai’s HiMATE telematic monitoring system, providing real-time monitoring, positioning and health alerts. Equipment Health Monitoring proactively predicts component failure, to provide optimal maintenance and reduce downtime.
