Hyundai Heavy Industries HI-POSS introduces HI-POSS hydraulic system – fuel savings up to 20%

Energy recovery in hydraulic systems is considerably more complicated than in electric powertrains. In a R220LC Crawler excavator Hyundai Heavy Industries has successfully integrated and demonstrated at Bauma 2013 its new HI-POSS system (Hi-POSS = Hyundai Intelligent Power Sharing and Optimal Energy Saving System). HI-POSS core components are:

  • Electronically controlled hydraulic valves
  • Hydraulic reservoir (accumulator)

The unique HI-POSS system controls the flow of oil between different consumers (hydraulic cylinders for boom, arm and bucket, motors for swing and drive motors) and the valves connecting accumulator and hydraulic pump. The amount of oil needed by consumers is electronically controlled and energy from certain movements (lowering the boom, retarding of swingmovements) is stored into the HI-POSS accumulator. The stored high-energy hydraulic oil is immediately available to other consumers and is used for power-intensive movements. Thus diesel engine and hydraulic pump do have to operate less instance, which saves a considerable amount of diesel fuel.

HI-POSS not only delivers high energy hydraulic oil, it is also able to execute certain movements of the attachments automatically. Thus, the excavator driver can teach in specific movements and read them back to carry on automatic digging movements. Milan Wamsteker, Marketing Manager at HHI in Geel, stresses: "With HI-POSS Hyundai is able to realize the first steps towards fully automatic unmanned excavators. We are sure that energy efficiency and half-/fullautomatic processes will be on the wishlist of future customers. Hyundai Heavy Industries defines itself as leader in technology for perfect performing and fuel efficient construction machinery. The new system will pioneer the performance for operator as well as drivers.

The first HI-POSS System has first been integrated in a crawler excavator R220LC. This machine is well chosen, because 21-tonne excavators are probably the most common type of machine in civil engineering. This preproduction excavator is equipped with EUR IIIb/Tier4i-engine. In near future HHI will provide the system with a Tier 4 final engine.

Captures:

1. Overview of the unique Hi-POSS system of HHI. A portion of the hydraulic energy is been stored in a accumulator, that will enhance fuel efficiency up to 20%.

2. The unique HI-POSS system controls the flow of oil between different consumers (hydraulic cylinders for boom, arm and bucket, motors for swing and drive motors) and the valves connecting accumulator and hydraulic pump.

3. Externally the HI-POSS equipped R220LC hardly differs from a "normal" crawler excavator - but this excavator is 20% more fuel efficient.
