On the 29th July 2015, IronPlanet, the leading online marketplace for buying and selling used heavy equipment and trucks, hosted its inaugural online auction of European-based surplus U.S. military equipment with outstanding success.
The auction drew over 40,000 unique visitors from when the bidding opened to the close of the last item on the final day. It was attended by registered users from 115 countries, all of whom were vying to buy from a range of used equipment from the U.S. Defence Logistics Agency (DLA). The equipment included trucks, trailers, forklifts, construction and agricultural equipment, and more. Over the course of the auction, there was an average of 23 bids per item sold, with 108 eventual buyers from Germany to the United States and beyond.
At this auction, 52% of all registered bidders were new to IronPlanet, expanding the customer base and exposure for IronPlanet’s DLA partnership in Europe. This kind of equipment is rarely available in such volume and for such good value to buyers from the general public, which included construction companies, military equipment enthusiasts and others.

Jeff Holmes, IronPlanet’s Vice President of Government Solutions, was positive about the results: “Considering this was our first auction for DLA equipment out of Europe, the results are great and the demand for this equipment surpassed our expectations. We look forward to offering more government surplus equipment to satisfy this demand further in future auctions.”
The equipment itself is based on a United States military base in Germersheim, Germany, and Holmes partly attributes the eagerness to buy on the condition in which the equipment has been kept: “Because the equipment is maintained to extremely high-standards for performance in military operations, it gives the buyers the confidence that they are purchasing quality items.” he said. “Quite often the vehicles have low-mileage and present exceptional value. Furthermore, the IronPlanet IronClad Assurance® and inspection reports act as a guarantee that the equipment is in the exact condition advertised.”
IronPlanet began selling DLA surplus rolling stock in the United States in November 2014. With the success of this first European-based auction, IronPlanet will now be selling equipment from other DLA bases in Europe, which is due to become available online at IronPlanet.com in the coming weeks. As a result, interested buyers will be able to continue to buy military equipment through IronPlanet’s monthly auctions, which are hosted on the last Wednesday of every month.
