Komatsu Europe International N.V. introduces the PW148-10 wheeled excavator, which will be showcased at Intermat 2015 in Paris (April 20-25). This new short tail machine is perfect for job sites with limited space, in urbanised areas or on narrow roads with heavy traffic.

The PW148-10 is powered by a Komatsu SAA4D107E-2 engine that is EU Stage IIIB emissions certified. Komatsu has leveraged its leadership in technology and innovation to design a more environmentally-friendly engine that increases power while decreasing fuel consumption. With operating weights ranging between 13.725 kg - 15.580 kg, the new excavator offers a net 90 kW (121 HP) at 2000 rpm and is more fuel-efficient than its predecessor, depending on the application and conditions. This improved efficiency comes in part from the variable-flow turbocharger that provides optimal airflow under all speeds and load conditions.

“Thanks to its industry leading characteristics, such as a superior lifting capacity, an outstanding stability and unrivalled driving performance, the productivity of the PW148-10 can equal that a higher class machine”, says Sebastian Zienau Product Manager for wheeled excavators. “The operator works in a perfectly safe environment and gets the job done faster, at a lower cost and with total peace of mind.”

New features of the PW148-10 include:

EU Stage IIIB emissions compliant

The Komatsu SAA4D107E-2 engine is EU Stage IIIB certified with less emissions and lower fuel consumption. It uses an advanced electronic control system to better manage airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion and exhaust aftertreatment to optimise performance, reduce emissions and fuel consumption and provide advanced diagnostic capabilities.

The integrated design of the new Komatsu Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (KDOC) allows this simple system to remove soot using 100% “true passive regeneration”, without the need for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The KDOC is designed for long life, with no scheduled replacement interval. Less complexity and truly seamless operation means lower owning and operating costs.

All the new excavator’s major components, including the engine, hydraulic pump, motors and valves, are exclusively designed and manufactured by Komatsu. This integrated design employs a closed centre load sensing hydraulic system that takes hydraulic efficiency to the next level, utilising both variable speed matching and low speed matching technology.

Engine management was enhanced on the PW148-10 and the hydraulic system updated with a new hydraulic main control valve (cartridge type). Easier to replace and with hardened internal parts, the new valve simplifies maintenance with better durability and increased component life time.

First class comfort & safety

As all Dash 10 models, the PW148-8 offers unrivalled machine management, top-class comfort and a safe working environment. The exceptionally comfortable seat is specially designed for wheeled machines. The wide and safe SpaceCab® comes standard with fully automatic climate control. Vibrations and noise levels are kept at a class-leading minimum thanks to the viscous damper cabin mounting.

Large panoramic windows guarantee an excellent all-round visibility, further supported by a standard rear-view camera. With a fingertip command on the right joystick, the operator can get a perfect image of the area behind the machine on a large 11” colour monitor on which new “ECO-Guidance tips support the operator in judging and improving fuel efficiency.

The new adjustable steering column can be adjusted to the operator’s preferred height, and the ergonomic joysticks with proportional controls were specially developed for work with a wheeled excavator: due to their horizontal orientation they allow safe and precise operation of hydraulic driven attachments. The oscillating axle can instantly be locked manually with a simple touch of a button on the left joystick. A new fine control Mode is standard to support the operator during very precise work, to get the job done faster.

All PW148-10 excavators are equipped with cruise control for comfortable long distance travel. New lighted rocker switches let the operator easily identify which functions are activated, even in the dark.

Easy serviceability

The easy-to-use interface of the Equipment Management and Monitoring System (EMMS), can be accessed along with all essential machine functions on the cab’s monitor screen and can be set in the blink of an eye. Komatsu machines are always designed for easy maintenance and the PW148-10 is no exception. The regular engine service points, greasing points and filters are centralized, and they are quickly and safely accessible by a new straight ladder.
