At the 2013 Bauma, Liebherr will introduce its new R 946 crawler excavator for demolition work; it complies with the Stage IIIB / Tier 4i exhaust emission limits.

The new machine is based on the R 946 standard crawler excavator introduced in the spring of 2012, and therefore possesses all the advantages of the standard version, including increased performance potential, greater convenience for the driver and simplified maintenance.

Special importance is attached to the integrated excavator-system technology, which is incorporated into all machines of the latest crawler-excavator generation, and ensures fast, smooth operating movements. To supply the necessary flow volume quickly enough and without mutual interference between individual consumers, the dual-circuit Positive Control hydraulic system is used. Compared with other systems, it avoids waste of energy by reducing and in some cases entirely eliminating pressure losses. The driver senses the action of the load-dependent volume distribution principle as harmonious, natural movement sequences.

The R 946 Demolition excavator has a robust steel structure that ensures absolute reliability even in very arduous working conditions.

Another special feature of the R 946 Demolition excavator is the integrated double Likufix quick-change system. The first Likufix is mounted on the end of the standard dipper stick, and forms the connection with the second dipper stick. This has the second Likufix attached to the outer end. The double Likufix enables the second dipper stick to be discarded in less than a minute, so that the excavator can for instance perform classic civil engineering tasks with a backhoe. Furthermore, the excavator can within a very short time be equipped with a variety of tools: sorter grab, hydraulic hammer, shears or pulveriser, and in this way its operating flexibility greatly enhanced.

The R 946 Demolition excavator exhibited at the Bauma is equipped with a 4.3 m long boom and a 3.3 m long dipper stick. With its second, 3.0 m long dipper stick, this special-purpose excavator can reach heights of up to 13 m. A full range of safety options is available to protect the excavator against falling material during demolition work of this kind.

The R 946 Demolition version of this crawler excavator is powered by a Liebherr diesel engine that complies with the current Stage IIIB / Tier 4i emission limits. This 6-cylinder engine develops 200 kW (272 hp) at 1,800 min−1.
