QuadTrak 160 from GreenMech gives Wolverhampton City Council more flexibility

When Wolverhampton City Council looked to purchase two new chippers for their Arboricultural Services they had a certain criteria in mind.  They were looking for a tracked model that had a turntable.  Three brands were demonstrated but the GreenMech QuadTrak 160 stood out and won the day – helped by the fact that it was the only one that came with a bespoke trailer.

Richard Johnson, Arboricultural Officer for Highways and Leisure at Wolverhampton City Council, was in charge of the team that settled on the GreenMech QuadTrak’s and Trailers.  “We didn’t want something just tracked, that could only be used on the leisure land, we wanted something that could be used universally. One of our sub-contractors Acorn Tree Services uses GreenMech chippers so we were familiar with the brand”, said Richard.  “The benefit of the GreenMech model is that it acts like a standard chipper when it’s on the trailer, but once off and on the tracks it can be used anywhere. Having the option of road-tow and tracked just makes the QuadTrak more versatile as to the situations it can deal with.  In woodland areas or spaces with restricted access tracked is best because you can chip straight into the woodland rather than into a HGV wagon, which could get stuck in wooded areas.”

Team Leader, Paul Watton uses the QuadTrak’s on a daily basis. “I was familiar with GreenMech chippers and had used their machines a couple of times before. The build quality of the QuadTrak is very good and so far we haven’t had any problems with either of the machines. We purchased them around 12 months ago and have only changed the blades for the first time at the end of May this year. Looking after the blades is really the only bit of maintenance needed so we take care, when working on the roadside, to not sweep what’s left and put it through the chipper – the quickest way to damage the blades!”

Having their own machines suits all of their needs and means they can develop a programme consisting of a cyclical highways scheme and a reactionary call out scheme.
