Sensor Technology Reduces Wear of Rubber Tracks

  • Sensors record the internal temperature of rubber tracks

  • Status monitoring for optimized service life of components

  • Technology allows optimum speed when transitioning between road and field

Continental rubber tracks are now becoming intelligent: At Agritechnica, the technology company will present the first model to be fitted with sensor technology in its treads. This technology allows the temperature of the rubber tracks to be measured and monitored during use on agricultural vehicles. “Monitoring of this kind helps operators of agricultural vehicles to extend the service life and efficiency of these components and avoid repair costs,” says Dr. Michael Hofmann, responsible for Industrial Belting Solutions at the ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group. In addition, thanks to the integrated sensor technology, deceleration during the transition to asphalt is minimized.

The sensor technology from Continental helps operators to monitor heat build-up on the rubber tracks. Using the sensors, the internal temperature of the rubber tracks can be measured at regular intervals, and a corresponding warning can be transmitted to a display in the driver’s cab if the build-up of heat is becoming critical. This is particularly beneficial when making the transition between fields and asphalt roads, as the rubber tracks are particularly susceptible to wear on the latter surface. Here, the higher the speed, the greater the frictional effects within the rubber tracks and between the components and the road surface. They are exposed to greater strain and become hot. Previously, drivers therefore had to considerably reduce their speed on asphalt, more than would perhaps be necessary, in order to protect the components. With the intelligent rubber tracks, drivers always have an overview of the temperature and can tailor their speed as effectively as possible. This allows them to get a longer service life out of the rubber tracks without having to reduce their speed. A further advantage of these smart products: Preventive maintenance ensures that action can be taken before a defect actually occurs. Prompt replacement of components avoids unscheduled vehicle downtime, thereby increasing the progress of work during operation.

Economical solution thanks to low ground pressure

Rubber tracks from Continental offer heavy tractor units such as tractors or combines a secure grip on soft, pliable soil, even with drive power exceeding 500 hp. They have a larger contact surface compared with tires, distributing the vehicle’s weight more evenly across a larger surface. They thus reduce the compaction of soil when driving on soft farming soils. Their high abrasion resistance and long service life are impressive, even in difficult conditions. The rubber tracks are maintenance-free and consume less energy than other types of tracks, making them a basis for complete, economical solutions that are profitable throughout the entire operating life.

With its portfolio of agricultural tires and rubber tracks, Continental offers the full range and is able to provide customers with the appropriate solution to get their agricultural vehicles moving on every surface.
