Biogas from renewable sources can be used as a fuel and is a popular source of energy for producing heat and electricity. Before feeding biogas to the gas grid, however, it needs to be cleaned. Raw biogas consists of only about 50 percent of methane – the actual energy carrier. In addition, it contains carbon dioxide, oxygen and sulfur compounds. These associated gases can cause severe corrosion in gas burners. BASF’s OASE® green technology solution cleans biogas through a chemical process and removes the undesired associated gases without a measurable loss of methane. After the treatment, the cleaned biogas has a methane content of over 96 percent.
