Cutting as an alternative to blasting

The 220 SM from Wirtgen selectively extracts raw materials to a cutting depth of up to 300 mm. <br>IMAGE SOURCE: WIRTGEN GROUP

Wirtgen (WIRTGEN Group)'s 220 SM Surface Miner has introduced a revolutionary cutting method at the Chorado mine in Grajaú, northeastern Brazil, replacing the traditional drilling and blasting technique used in gypsum mining. This innovation significantly enhances productivity, more than doubling output with the addition of a second machine, and increases safety by enabling low-vibration, low-emission operations close to infrastructure. The environmental impact is minimized with reduced noise and dust. CEO Marcos Vasconcelos Ferreira from Gesso Integral adopted this sustainable, efficient technology, which allows selective material extraction of high purity, eliminating the need for pre-crushing. This mining method also supports local communities, demonstrated by the successful training of Marlete Ribeiro Souza Guajajára, an inexperienced local recruit, to operate the machinery efficiently.
