MX20 RAIL – the next level

Hydrema introduces a new railway excavator – The MX20 RAIL - with greater lifting capacity and increased stability.

After a few years with great success for Hydrema's compact railway excavator MX16 Rail in Denmark as well as several export markets, the Danish manufacturer has listened to its customers and developed the Hydrema MX20 Rail, with greater lifting capacity and stability, while retaining the high hydraulic performance.

The new MX20 Rail base machine weighs 21 tons, and the most important difference is the added counterweight. The new machine is built on the same basic structure as the MX16 RAIL, and the changes are primarily to be found in the operating software. The hydraulic pumps, engine and other components on the MX16 RAIL are designed for heavy use and easily fulfill the requirements for the greater lifting capacity of the MX20 Rail.

A Step into an Entirely New Segment

With the MX20 Rail, Hydrema is stepping into an entirely new segment. Until recently, priority has been given to the compact design so the machine can work on double-track railway lines at minimum distance. Many customers, however, do not need the compact design, because they work on single-track railway lines or in completely closed sections. Here it is desirable to have a machine with greater lifting capacity and high hydraulic capacity because the work tools continue to be larger, heavier and require a higher hydraulic flow. MX20 RAIL is capable of lifting 13.890 lb (6300 kg) at 10 ft. reach, which is 15% higher than the MX16 RAIL.

A Strong Performer

The MX20 RAIL is fitted with a powerful 167hp (123 kW) Cummins engine, which complies with EPA Tier 4 Final without the use of Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) but by using DOC and SCR catalyst with DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid). Two hydraulic pumps provides an astonishing total oil flow of 107 gpm (407 l/min), of which 23 gpm (88l/min) is dedicated to the slew function. The Rail excavator matches others in the industry regarding lifting capacity and stability, and even still has a turning radius 10-12 inch shorter than the typical 20-22 ton machine.

Hydrema’s unique rail wheel modules provides the capability to operate both in Low Rail mode with the rubber tires running directly onto the railway tracks for maximum traction and in High Rail mode with the tires raised 4 inches from the tracks for maximum stability as well as protection of track switches and sensors.

The Distinct Modular Concept

Hydrema's success with railway equipment is due not least to the fact that the machines are entirely factory-fitted, while competitors have their new machines rebuilt for railway operation by a subcontractor. Factory-fit solutions means, among other things, short lead times. Moreover, the rail equipment is included in the module concept that is essential to Hydrema.

The distinct modular concept means that the factory, also quite late in the production process, may decide to turn an excavator into a railway machine. It comes with many production advantages, and provides customers with great advantages through shorter lead time and fewer different spare parts.

The first machines have been delivered to customers in both Denmark and the Netherlands. Now Hydrema also introduces the Railway excavator into the North American market and will display the machine at the Conexpo exhibition (Gold Lot – Booth 3023).
