Take Control of the Total Cost of Ownership

Total Cost of Ownership, or TCO, is becoming an increasingly common approach among forest machine owners. Komatsu Forest wants to make it easier for forest machine owners not only to gain an overview of all costs, but also to gain an understanding of how small, simple cost savings can influence the total cost of ownership when considering the machine's entire life cycle.

TCO means that the machine owner performs a calculation that not only considers the purchase cost of the forest machine, but also all future costs that machine ownership entails, such as spare parts, service, tyres, uptime, personnel, interest, depreciation, insurance and fuel consumption. The result is that the machine owner can calculate a cost per unit, such as per hour of work or per cubic metre of timber produced.

Thinking in terms of TCO makes it easier to identify the factors that can be influenced to increase production rates and reduce costs.

"This involves, for example, investing in preventative service in order to avoid unscheduled downtime and maintain continually high uptime. It can also involve making sure the machine has the right settings. Small adjustments, such as fine-tuning the saw speed or crane operation, can have a significant impact on productivity and the total cost of ownership of your machine. Methodology training is another factor that can increase the chances of harvesting that extra tree every hour," explains Jörgen Nilsson, Product Manager at Komatsu Forest.

Komatsu Forest offers a number of tools that can help forest machine owners gain an overview of all costs. MaxiFleet is a system that enables you to quickly and easily search for, compile and present all machine and operational data generated by a machine. The ProAct 2.0 service concept prevents unscheduled downtime and maintains continually high uptime.

"A machine owner who takes the time to compare how changes to different variables affect the total cost of ownership of a machine quickly gains a clear picture of how they can influence their overall economy," says Mr Nilsson.

Facts: MaxiFleet

Komatsu Forest's MaxiFleet fleet management system gathers all information about a forest machine to provide easy access. This optimizes work regardless of whether it concerns one or many machines or whether you are an operator or a machine owner. MaxiFleet automatically manages the information flow from the forest machines, ensuring that files are transferred and production, GIS and operational data are sent without involving the operator and without affecting production. An Internet connection enables access to MaxiFleet from any standard smart phone, tablet or computer.

Facts: ProAct 2.0

ProAct 2.0 is a service and maintenance concept in which a preventative approach and proactive measures make machine ownership easier while increasing peace of mind and profitability. The basic idea behind ProAct 2.0 is to replace parts before they fail, to conduct service before downtime strikes and to continually improve and optimise maintenance measures depending on the machine owner's unique situation – all at times that suit the business.
