Potain self-erecting crane reaches new heights on Norway mountaintop project

A Potain HDM 40 self-erecting crane was uniquely transported to the summit of Fløya mountain in Norway for the construction of a three-story restaurant with a skywalk, facing the challenge of being installed at 421 meters above sea level. This remote construction project, overseen by contractor Hent, required the crane's versatile performance and reliability, achieved through Potain's comprehensive customer support and Kranor, the local dealer. Weighing 14 tons, the crane was moved using custom skis and snow groomers, and once in place, it was anchored to mitigate the strong winds typical of this exposed location. The project leverages the crane's capacity to lift materials such as timber and concrete slabs, which are delivered by helicopter, capitalizing on its established long service life. The restaurant, located at the summit station of the Fjellheisen cable car overlooking Tromsø, is set to become a prime destination for views of the fjords and Northern Lights upon its completion in 2027.
